MAFS Star Mel Schilling Dies at 53 After Cancer Battle

Relationship expert Mel Schilling, known for her role on Married At First Sight, has passed away at 53 after a prolonged fight with cancer. Her husband, Gareth, shared the heartbreaking news on social media, confirming she lost her battle following a 2023 diagnosis.

Tributes on Good Morning Britain

During the March 25 broadcast of Good Morning Britain, entertainment correspondent Richard Arnold honored Schilling’s enduring impact. He described her as “the matriarch of the show,” noting how she matched couples on their wedding day and provided expert guidance throughout their journeys.

The program featured a pre-recorded message from Lauren Dunn, a contestant on season 11 of Married At First Sight Australia, filmed in 2023 shortly after Schilling’s initial diagnosis. Dunn reflected: “Now, looking back, you could see that Mel was sick during filming, and the way she pushed through and sat there, she was always so professional and kind and smiley.”

Dunn continued: “It feels like everything has happened super quickly; it’s really devastating. She had a really good sense of humour. She always had a good laugh with me when I would say outlandish things. I think the world is really lucky they got to have Mel as their mum, she was like the mother of Australia and the UK. I know she was so loved in the UK and I think she’s really left her mark on the world and on MAFS as a show, she’s irreplaceable in my opinion.”

Arnold also highlighted tributes from figures like Davina McCall, concluding: “Our thoughts, of course, are with Mel’s family at this sad time, quite the legacy she left there.”

Progression of Her Illness

Schilling received a colon cancer diagnosis in 2023 and achieved remission after treatment. However, routine checks in February revealed nodules in her lungs, indicating the cancer had spread. Later, severe headaches and numbness prompted scans showing progression to the left side of her brain.

In a poignant social media update, she shared: “Despite subsequent radiotherapy sessions, my oncology team have now told me there is nothing further they can do. Hearing those words changes everything. So that’s where I am now. My light is starting to fade – and quickly.”
