Harry Maguire, overlooked for the England World Cup squad, has been observed engaging with fans while distributing football stickers in New York City.
The Manchester United defender was seen yesterday inside a Panini football van located at the Rockefeller Centre, interacting with supporters. This appearance in the Big Apple is understood to be part of a promotional event for Panini stickers, occurring after his exclusion from the 26-man tournament roster.
Young fans expressed surprise at encountering the footballer handing out sticker packs in the United States. One youngster was quoted asking, “What is Harry Maguire doing here,” before posing for a photograph with the player.
New York Excursions and Podcast Appearance
During his visit to New York, Maguire also connected with Manchester United supporters at The Long Acre bar, situated near Times Square. He made a guest appearance on Gary Lineker’s podcast, ‘The Rest is Football,’ and also enjoyed a round of golf.
On the podcast, Lineker touched upon the recent 4-2 victory against Croatia, prompting a discussion about squad selections. Lineker asked, “Did it start to make sense, the way England played today, perhaps some of the people who have been omitted?” He then quickly clarified, “with one exception,” seemingly acknowledging the sensitive nature of the question in Maguire’s presence.
Maguire himself recounted a prior FaceTime conversation with the manager, where he was informed of his omission from the England World Cup squad. He shared on the podcast that the manager opted for players who had contributed to the qualifying matches, stating, “But he did say that he can’t really give me an excuse.”
The defender expressed his deep disappointment following the decision. “I was confident I could have played a major part this summer for my country after the season I’ve had,” Maguire stated. “I’ve been left shocked and gutted by the decision. I’ve loved nothing more than putting that shirt on and representing my country over the years. I wish the players all the best this summer.”
The manager’s central defensive selections for the squad included Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa, Jarell Quansah, Dan Burn, and John Stones. Reports also indicate that Phil Foden and Cole Palmer were not selected, while Lewis Hall and Luke Shaw were also left out. Ivan Toney’s inclusion has drawn attention, given his limited recent game time under the manager.
England is scheduled to face Ghana next at Boston Stadium on Tuesday, June 23rd.
