Man Utd Fans Face Premier League’s Toughest Scheduling Woes

Published on

Supporters eagerly await the confirmation of their team’s Premier League fixtures each season, viewing it as a key step toward planning for upcoming matches. Yet, asterisks marked ‘subject to change’ often disrupt these plans. Manchester United fans endure more than their share this season, facing a barrage of late kick-off times due to the club’s profile and absence from European and domestic cup competitions.

Upcoming String of Late-Night Games

The Premier League resumes next week with Manchester United kicking off a series of 8pm matches. These include two home games against Leeds United and Brentford on Mondays, plus an away fixture at Chelsea on a Saturday evening.

Record Number of Monday Night Slots

The Football Supporters’ Association recently reported that Manchester United received six ‘Monday Night Football’ selections this season, surpassing all other clubs except Everton. Guidelines limit teams to no more than five combined Monday and Friday evening fixtures.

Fans Detail the Real-World Impact

Duncan Drasdo, CEO of the Manchester United Supporters’ Trust, highlights the challenges these schedules pose. “When we travel away, public transport options home are often unavailable,” he states. “This forces fans to incur overnight stay costs and miss work, significantly affecting attendance.”

For home matches, Drasdo notes, late Monday kick-offs diminish the excitement of traditional Saturday 3pm games, dampening atmosphere. School-aged fans face particular issues with midweek evenings, as games end too late for long journeys, further eroding the event’s appeal.

European Commitments Drive Changes

External factors frequently shift timings. Matches slotted for Saturday 12:30pm have moved to Sunday 8pm due to Europa League conflicts, as seen last season during United’s visit to Fulham. This year, a record nine Premier League teams compete in UEFA tournaments for the 2025/26 season.

League officials warn: “Owing to our clubs’ performances in Europe last season, a record nine Premier League teams will play in UEFA competitions in the 2025/26 season. While the Premier League celebrates this success, it will impact League match scheduling. Expect more last-minute changes if clubs advance in knockouts. Fans should plan accordingly, especially when their team or opponents reach later UEFA stages.”

Calls for Better Protections

Drasdo, who met recently with Premier League CEO Richard Masters, acknowledges the logic: non-European teams like United attract broadcasters due to high viewership. Returning to Europe next season may ease the burden, but he urges contract reforms.

“Limits exist per broadcast package but not per slot,” Drasdo explains. “Clubs should cap selections at five 8pm weekday or Monday games. Embed this in the next broadcast deal to bind the league.”

Monday nights draw special criticism for clashing with Tuesday work or school. Public transport strains lead to extra costs, with fans opting for overnight stays. Drasdo suggests broadcasters fund solutions like special trains or buses, citing the club’s recent Bournemouth provision as a positive step. “Inconvenience supporters, and you must mitigate it,” he asserts. “Currently, post-deal, fans just cope.”

Lifting the 3pm Blackout?

One proposal involves ending the UK 3pm Saturday blackout rule, which shields lower-league attendances. Drasdo supports testing it, questioning its impact. “Broadcasters prioritize revenue, including U.S. audiences favoring certain slots,” he says. “Evidence of harm to lower leagues seems overstated. Trial it, compensate if needed, or abandon.” Such changes could address frequent Saturday 3pm complaints from fans.
