Man Utd Revokes 685 Season Tickets in Touting Crackdown

Published on

Manchester United has taken decisive action against ticket touting, revoking 685 season tickets and issuing warnings to an additional 464 supporters. The club initiated a comprehensive investigation over the summer to combat the illicit resale and misuse of tickets for financial gain. This crackdown has drawn criticism from some fan groups, who express concern that genuine supporters might be unfairly penalized.

Club’s Investigation and Findings

The club’s extensive review identified 1,617 accounts exhibiting “unusual activity.” Manchester United stated that these account holders were contacted to provide explanations, which could lead to the removal of restrictions. A significant portion of these cases involved supporters sharing account details and passwords, a practice that contravenes club regulations. However, the club indicated that no sanctions were imposed if the tickets were not subsequently sold for profit.

To ensure fairness, Manchester United established an independent appeals panel, including fan representatives, to re-evaluate decisions made during the initial investigation. The club emphasized that the most severe sanctions, such as season ticket bans, were reserved for instances where substantial evidence of ticket resale above face value or activity for financial gain was found. This included the operation of organized networks involved in controlling, selling, and distributing tickets from numerous accounts.

Sanctions and Appeals Process

Of the 685 accounts ultimately banned, 499 were suspensions confirmed by the appeals board. An additional 73 accounts faced bans after not lodging an appeal, while 113 were banned for failing to respond to the club’s request for further information.

Regarding other supporters, 226 received final warnings for misuse that did not appear to be for financial gain. Another 238 individuals had their initial season ticket bans reduced to restrictions on forwarding home tickets and applying for away match tickets. The remaining 468 identified cases were resolved without any punitive measures.

All season ticket holders whose tickets were revoked will receive a refund. Their seats are slated to be offered to individuals at the top of the season ticket waiting list, aiming to reward loyal fans.

Fan Group Concerns and Protests

Despite the club’s efforts to implement a fair process, fan groups have voiced strong opposition. The 1958, a prominent Manchester United supporters’ group, issued a statement calling for unity among fans, citing concerns about bans and sanctions being issued without consistently clear and compelling evidence. The group is reportedly organizing a protest ahead of the upcoming Manchester derby.

In their statement, The 1958 highlighted the long-standing loyalty and dedication of match-going supporters, asserting that this loyalty should be met with respect. They argued that the issue extends beyond specific individuals or groups and reflects the club’s overall approach to its fanbase. The group urged the club to present concrete evidence when serious wrongdoing or organized ticket touting is suspected, emphasizing that no loyal supporter should be presumed guilty without a fair chance to understand and contest the accusations.

Alleged Communication to Supporters

Adding to the controversy, a text message allegedly sent to a season ticket holder before a recent Champions League match went viral. The message reportedly informed the recipient that they did not have a ticket for the game and advised them not to attend Old Trafford. It further stated that tickets were still available for purchase and warned that failure to buy a ticket could result in the deactivation of their season ticket for a future Premier League game, potentially impacting their eligibility for away matches.

Club’s Stance on Ticket Misuse

Manchester United maintains that its ticketing policies are designed to ensure fair access for genuine supporters and to prevent the exploitation of the secondary market. The club’s stated aim is to protect the integrity of the ticketing system and to prioritize fans who adhere to the rules. The investigation and subsequent sanctions underscore the club’s commitment to addressing ticket touting, a persistent issue in football that can alienate long-term fans and inflate prices for casual attendees.

Conclusion

The crackdown on ticket touting by Manchester United represents a significant effort to curb illicit resale practices. While the club asserts its actions are necessary to maintain fairness and prevent financial gain from ticket scalping, the measures have sparked debate and concern among fan groups regarding the evidence presented and the potential impact on loyal supporters. The situation highlights the ongoing tension between clubs seeking to control ticket distribution and the desire of fans for accessible and fairly priced match tickets.
