Man Utd Sell Academy Defender Rhys Bennett to Fleetwood Town

Manchester United have finalized the permanent transfer of defender Rhys Bennett to Fleetwood Town, allowing the 22-year-old academy graduate to continue his development away from Old Trafford.

Bennett’s Path from Youth to Permanent Move

Bennett joined Manchester United at age 10 and progressed through the ranks, captaining the youth team to FA Youth Cup victory in 2022 with a goal in the final against Nottingham Forest. Despite his promise, he never featured for the senior squad and faced stiff competition from established defenders.

Last season, Bennett gained valuable experience on loan at Fleetwood Town, where he made 35 appearances in League Two. Prior to that, he had a stint at Stockport County. Fleetwood, who ended the campaign in 14th place under initial management by Charlie Adam, appealed to Bennett with their playing style.

Excitement for New Chapter

Upon sealing the deal, Bennett expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity. “I’ve just turned 22 and I think now is the time to kick on and play as many games as I can,” he stated. “I’ve been out on loan, I’ve played a lot of football, and it’s about getting more experience and growing as a player and as a person.”

He highlighted the club’s appeal: “The style of football really worked for me. We wanted to play, be comfortable on the ball, and the back five suited me. There are a lot of good players here and that helped me kick on.” Bennett added, “I’m absolutely buzzing to be back here. From the moment I came in last time it just felt like a family. I’m really excited to pick up where I left off and get back playing football.”

United’s January Transfer Approach

Manchester United prioritize major signings for the summer window, particularly in midfield, and have approved several departures this January. Fellow young forward Joe Hugill has moved to Scottish club Kilmarnock.

Meanwhile, striker Joshua Zirkzee remains at the club despite interest from Italian teams and his recent dip in form. Head coach Michael Carrick confirmed his commitment, stating, “I am looking forward to working with him. That’s it, nothing else has been needed to be said.”
