This pattern appeared in the 2-0 victory over City, where United held just 31.8 percent of the ball, and against Arsenal, with 43.9 percent possession. However, win rates dip to 43 percent and points per game fall to 1.49 in fixtures where United exceed 50 percent possession.
Tactical Vulnerabilities Against Defensive Opponents
Many rivals employ a strategy of ceding possession to United, absorbing pressure, and countering swiftly. This approach has proven effective against both Ten Hag’s and Ruben Amorim’s setups. While United capitalized on transitions in wins over City and Arsenal, upcoming opponents are unlikely to yield control so readily.
United perform strongly against the Premier League’s top six, trailing only Aston Villa in points per game this season. Yet, they rank 12th against the bottom six and have drawn seven matches versus the bottom eight since November. Three centre-backs faced a single striker, Thierno Barry, negating any numerical edge. Over the past three and a half seasons, United have exceeded this possession level only three times in Premier League play, losing two of those encounters.

Carrick must enhance unpredictability to counter reactive teams. Executives at the club seek to avoid repeats of earlier struggles, such as the August 1-1 draw with Fulham.
Bruno Fernandes missed a first-half penalty in that match, and Fulham manager Marco Silva detailed his tactical blueprint post-game. “We know how they defend and we know how they like to squeeze from the back five,” Silva explained. “And if you don’t give bodies for them to squeeze from the back five you can create superiority in the middle. We know they play with two in the middle so we tried to overload with our three plus Alex Iwobi. It was as simple as that.”
