Margot Robbie channels Y2K-era Kylie Minogue in a striking new Chanel handbag advertisement launched on Monday. The 35-year-old Australian actress pays tribute to the 57-year-old pop icon by recreating scenes from Kylie’s 2002 music video “Come Into My World.”
Homage to a Classic Directed by Michel Gondry
Filmmaker Michel Gondry, who directed the original video, returns for this Chanel spot. The ad features multiple versions of Robbie navigating a soundstage designed to mimic a Parisian street. Post-production effects create the illusion of several Margots appearing simultaneously, each carrying a Chanel 25 handbag in varying colors and sizes. The setting swaps the original laundromat for a bookstore, or ‘librairie.’
Kylie Minogue makes a cameo appearance in a window, dressed in pink to match her look from the music video, as Robbie waves to her.
Margot Robbie’s Admiration for the Original
Robbie shared her childhood fascination with the video. “I remember watching it as a kid and thinking it was so cool and clever – the in-camera trickery he’s so famous for,” she told Vogue. She joked that the ad serves as her way of portraying Kylie on screen without singing and “ruining it for everyone.”
Addressing Biopic Rumors
The advertisement nods to earlier speculation about Robbie portraying Minogue in a biopic. In September 2025, during a BBC Radio 2 interview, Robbie dismissed the idea despite Minogue’s public endorsement.
Stunned by the news, Robbie exclaimed, “She did not?! Why has nobody ever told me this before?! That is wild information.” Flattered but firm, she added, “I am beyond honoured. Of course, I could not. I can’t sing like Kylie.” She expressed discomfort with actors taking musical roles without strong vocals.
An Aussie Bonding Moment
Robbie described her first meeting with Minogue as casually Australian. The pair connected over cocktails at Los Angeles’ Chateau Marmont after Minogue’s team reached out. “I thought it was going to be about work or a charity thing,” Robbie recalled. “But she just said, ‘You’re an Aussie, I’m an Aussie, we should hang out.’ And then we just got drunk together.”
