Mary Fowler, a standout player for the Matildas, expresses confidence in making a significant impact at the Women’s Asian Cup. Australia kicks off its campaign against the Philippines in Perth on March 1, aiming for its first title since 2010.
Fowler’s Road to Recovery
The 23-year-old forward suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee while playing for Manchester City in April 2025. After over nine months sidelined, she returned as a 75th-minute substitute in a 5-1 FA Cup victory over Chelsea in early February 2026.
Following that debut, Fowler missed a few more games due to minor setbacks but earned her first start against Sheffield United in the FA Cup on February 22. Despite limited match fitness, she feels prepared for the tournament.
“After getting my first minutes against Chelsea, I then had a few little bumps along the road, so I missed a couple of games,” Fowler said. “But then last weekend I had my first start. So that was really good for the confidence and really good to just see how the body feels during a game, but also pulling up well afterwards.”
Fowler credits the warm Australian weather for easing her knee issues, which felt “frozen” from England’s cold conditions. “I feel good being here. And I think the heat’s really going to help,” she added.
Mental Reset and Proven Talent
The injury provided Fowler with a much-needed mental break from the relentless football routine. “Because I’ve been playing football for so many years, it becomes such a routine. It’s easy to lose the joy in it when you’re just doing the same thing over and over again,” she explained. “Having this time out has allowed me to just mentally have a bit of a break and gain a fresh perspective on how lucky I am to play this sport as a job.”
With 16 goals in 63 appearances for the Matildas, Fowler emerged as a star during the 2023 Women’s World Cup at age 20. She remains a pivotal figure in Australia’s title pursuit.
