Maternity Care Petition Handed to Downing Street Amid Star’s Shock

Published on

Reality television personality Louise Thompson has expressed her astonishment following a visit to 10 Downing Street to deliver a petition advocating for the appointment of a maternity commissioner and enhancements to maternal and infant care. Thompson, formerly of the show ‘Made In Chelsea’, shared that she remains “in shock” after the significant event, which marks a pivotal moment in her ongoing campaign for improved maternity services.

Campaign Genesis and Personal Motivation

Thompson’s advocacy stems from her near-fatal experience during the birth of her son, Leo, in November 2021. An emergency Caesarean section, necessitated when her baby’s head became lodged in her pelvis during the final stages of labor, led to severe complications. She required an extensive three-hour surgery to address a hemorrhage while conscious, as she was not placed under general anesthesia. This traumatic event resulted in her developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The ordeal profoundly impacted Thompson, leaving her with subsequent PTSD episodes that manifested as debilitating experiences, including paralysis and screaming fits in her sleep. Her health challenges did not end there; she later required a stoma bag due to the removal of her colon caused by ulcerative colitis, a chronic inflammatory bowel condition. Furthermore, she manages lupus, an autoimmune disorder causing chronic fatigue and joint pain, and has been diagnosed with hydrosalpinx, a condition involving fluid-filled swelling of a fallopian tube. These extensive health struggles formed the basis of her 2024 book, ‘Lucky’.

The Petition for Change

Driven by her personal experiences and a desire to prevent others from enduring similar hardships, Thompson has become a dedicated campaigner for better maternity care. She has previously organized protests and engaged with political figures, including former health secretary Wes Streeting, to raise awareness and push for systemic improvements.

Collaborating with Conservative MP Theo Clarke, Thompson co-authored a petition that calls for the establishment of a national maternity strategy and the crucial appointment of a maternity commissioner. This initiative has garnered substantial public support, accumulating over 167,000 signatures. The petition aims to create a more robust and responsive system for mothers and newborns.

Downing Street Visit and Emotional Aftermath

The culmination of their efforts saw Thompson and Clarke visit the Prime Minister’s official residence this week to formally present the petition. Accompanying the signatures was a substantial collection of letters from individuals and families who bravely shared their personal maternity care experiences. These letters represent a powerful testament to the widespread impact of current maternity service provision.

On Wednesday evening, Thompson shared an update on her campaign via Instagram, posting a video that captured the significance of the Downing Street visit. In her accompanying message, she revealed the emotional toll the week had taken. “Have held it together all week, but creating this and re-watching it over and over again to remind myself that this is actually real and that this day really happened is making me cry and it’s a huge release,” she wrote. She described feeling as though she had “just woke up from the biggest haze.”

Thompson articulated her deep emotions, stating, “I feel emotional because I’m really just a normal girl whose life got totally torn apart one day and I never thought I’d get back to a normal life let alone achieving things like this.” She extended profound gratitude to the “brave brave families” whose letters formed a critical part of the submission, emphasizing the personal importance of their contributions to her and her team.

Looking Ahead: The Beginning of a New Phase

Describing herself as a “mouthpiece” for the campaign’s supporters, Thompson acknowledged the profound significance of the Downing Street visit. However, she also underscored that this is not an endpoint but rather the commencement of a more intensive phase of work. “I think I’m still a little in shock because I’ve realised this isn’t actually the end of the mission. It’s only just the beginning,” she stated. “There is a lot of work to do.”

The visit and the petition handover represent a significant milestone in the campaign for improved maternity care, bringing increased attention to the issues raised by Thompson and the thousands who have supported her cause. The focus now shifts to the actions that will follow this high-profile engagement, as the campaign pushes forward to achieve its objectives for better support and safety for mothers and babies.
