Max Verstappen Frustrated by Red Bull Car After P6 in Australian GP

Max Verstappen voiced clear frustration with his Red Bull car following the Australian Grand Prix, the opening race of the 2026 Formula 1 season. The Dutch driver suffered a dramatic qualifying crash, starting from 20th on the grid before charging to sixth place.

Qualifying Setback and Recovery

Verstappen described the incident after his early crash: “To lose the car like that on the braking, I’ve never experienced that in my life. I hit the pedal and suddenly the whole rear axle just completely locked up, so definitely a bit weird.”

Despite the poor start, the four-time world champion sliced through the field to finish sixth, trailing McLaren’s Lando Norris. George Russell claimed victory for Mercedes, with teammate Kimi Antonelli in second. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton rounded out the podium in third and fourth.

Team Radio Reveals Ongoing Issues

Verstappen earned eight points for his efforts, but his post-race team radio message highlighted persistent challenges. He noted: “We just grained way too quick and also the hard tyre was definitely worse. Yeah thank you guys. We worked really hard for this. You did a really good job. It’s just simply frustrating to drive.”

His comments on the car’s handling, despite multiple overtakes, have sparked concern among Formula 1 fans about his long-term commitment to the sport under the current regulations.

Calls for Regulatory Changes

In a post-race interview, Verstappen reiterated criticism of the new rules. He stated: “I love racing, but you can only take so much. I know that they’re, well, I think they’re willing to listen, the FIA and F1, but I just hope that there is some action because it’s not that I’m the only one saying it – a lot of people are speaking the same.

“If it’s drivers, fans, we just want the best for the sport. It’s not that we are critical just to be critical. We are critical for a reason, we want it to be Formula 1, you know, proper Formula 1 on steroids. Today, of course, again, that was not the case.”

When asked about potential retirement, Verstappen responded: “What they should worry about is the rules, just focus on that. They ask questions and I give my opinion of what I would like to see and what I think is better for the sport because I do care about it, I do love racing and I want it to be better than this, right?

“So let’s see what we can do. I hope that even during this year maybe we can come up with some different solutions so it becomes more enjoyable for everyone.”
