Verstappen Slams F1’s New Hybrid Rules as ‘Mario Kart, Not Racing’

Max Verstappen warns that Formula 1’s new 50-50 electric hybrid regulations could ruin the sport unless changes happen quickly. The Red Bull driver launched a fierce critique after retiring from the Chinese Grand Prix, insisting fans who enjoy the action do not truly understand racing.

Verstappen’s Harsh Words Post-China DNF

Verstappen pulled out on lap 45 due to an energy recovery system failure while running sixth, behind Haas driver Oliver Bearman, following a recovery from a poor start. He also placed sixth in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.

“It’s still terrible,” Verstappen stated. “I don’t know if someone likes this, then you really don’t know what racing is about. It’s not fun at all. It’s playing Mario Kart. This is not racing. Look at the racing. You are boosting past, then you run out of battery the next straight. They boost past you again. For me, it’s just a joke.”

Verstappen stressed his views stem from the rules themselves, not Red Bull’s performance issues. He accused rivals of praising the format only because it benefits them now. “Some will say it’s great because they are winning races, which is fair enough,” he noted. “When you have an advantage, why would you give that up? Most drivers don’t like it, and real F1 fans won’t either.”

Counterarguments from Rivals

Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton offered a stark contrast, calling his intense battle with teammate Charles Leclerc the “best experience I have had in racing.” Finishing third after a close fight, Hamilton added, “It is way easier to follow. There is not too much wake. It is awesome. There was a thin piece of paper between us, but we didn’t exchange any paint. It was about racing with respect, like karting again, swapping positions repeatedly.”

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff attributed Verstappen’s frustration to Red Bull’s struggling car. “Max is in a horror show,” Wolff said. “His onboard footage from qualifying shows it’s horrendous to drive. But the racing between Ferrari and Mercedes was good entertainment. We shouldn’t be too nostalgic for eras with no overtaking—the product stands strong now.”

FIA Response and Next Steps

The 2026 regulations have split opinions across the paddock. Teams convene this week with FIA single-seater director Nikolas Tombazis to address concerns. No alterations occur before the Japanese Grand Prix in two weeks, but a working group forms to explore tweaks ahead of the Miami Grand Prix on May 3.

Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli claimed victory in China, sharing the podium with teammate George Russell and Hamilton. Verstappen cautioned that unchecked issues will “come back to bite” F1. “It will eventually ruin the sport,” he said. “We need solutions, but agreement will be tough and political.”
