McIlroy Shares Masters Lead After Squandering Record Six-Shot Edge

Published on

Rory McIlroy’s commanding six-shot lead after 36 holes—the largest in Masters history—evaporated during a turbulent third round at Augusta National. Despite posting a one-over-par 73, the Northern Irishman now shares the top spot with surging Players Championship winner Cameron Young, as a pack of contenders closes the gap heading into the final day.

McIlroy’s Third-Round Struggles

McIlroy, who dazzled with 12-under-par through the first two rounds, faltered early and often. A wayward approach at the first hole skipped through the green, leading to a three-putt bogey after chipping with his putter. On the par-five second, his drive found the trees, forcing a par on a birdie-friendly hole.

He responded with a drive that reached the green at the shortened par-four third, converting a tap-in birdie after a missed 22-footer for eagle. However, Patrick Reed’s hot start with three early birdies trimmed McIlroy’s overnight advantage to two shots within 30 minutes.

The real damage came later: a double bogey at the 11th after his approach from the fairway plunged into the water, followed by another dropped shot. This handed Young the outright lead momentarily. McIlroy fought back with birdies at 14 and 15 but surrendered a stroke at 17, clinging to a share of the lead.

Young’s Masterclass Propels Him to the Top

Cameron Young fired a stunning seven-under-par 65, vaulting into contention. Starting strong after a shaky first-round front nine at four over, he mirrored his dramatic birdie-birdie finish to win the Players Championship. A brief stumble at 15—dumping his third shot into the water for bogey—was offset by a 27-foot birdie at 16.

Contenders Lurking Just Behind

McIlroy and Young will tackle the final round together, but threats abound. Playing partner Sam Burns sits two shots back. Shane Lowry, who made history with his second career hole-in-one at Augusta, trails by three. Major winners Justin Rose and Jason Day also lurk three strokes off the pace.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler matched Young’s low round with a 65 but remains four back after starting even par. Haotong Li joins him at seven under, heightening the drama.

With momentum shifting rapidly, McIlroy must rediscover his early-week form to secure a second green jacket and join legends like Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, and Tiger Woods in the career Grand Slam club. Expect more twists on Sunday.
