Melania Trump’s Quick Realization Amid White House Dinner Gunshots

Published on

President Donald Trump recounted the tense moments during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner when gunshots disrupted the event at the Washington Hilton ballroom. Speaking at a West Wing press briefing shortly after, Trump described the initial confusion as he and First Lady Melania Trump sat side by side.

The Shots Ring Out

Trump noted the first sound caught everyone off guard. “It’s always shocking when something like this happens,” he said. “The first lady on my right, and I heard a noise… I kinda thought it was a tray going down.”

Seconds later, multiple shots echoed through the packed room, prompting guests to dive under tables. Some reacted instantly, while others paused in disbelief. “It was a gun and some people understood that pretty quickly and other people didn’t,” Trump explained. “I was watching to see what was happening.”

Melania’s Instinctive Response

Melania Trump quickly grasped the danger. “Melania was cognizant of what happened and I think she knew,” the President stated. He described her recognizing it as a “bad noise,” calling the ordeal “a rather traumatic experience for her.” Video footage captured the President, First Lady, and Vice President JD Vance ducking under their table on stage as the gunfire erupted.

Swift Security Action

Secret Service agents, including the Counter Assault Team in tactical gear, stormed the stage with weapons drawn. They secured senior officials amid the chaos. Agents pulled Trump to safety, where he briefly slipped before being escorted out. “It was a matter of seconds before we were out the door and got into an area,” Trump said, commending the response. “The performance of the Secret Service and the police, all of law enforcement, was very good.”

The DC Metropolitan Police Department identified the suspected shooter as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, from Torrance, California, who was a guest at the Hilton. Authorities continue investigating how the suspect approached the ballroom.

Defiant Plans Ahead

Trump vowed to reschedule the annual dinner. “We’re going to be doing one hopefully within the next 30 days,” he affirmed, mentioning his prepared remarks. “I was all set to really rip some of the journalists in the room… this would be the most inappropriate speech.”

In a personal reflection, Trump highlighted Melania’s concern for his safety amid past threats. “The first lady was doing a terrific job. She loves the country. She recognises it better than any,” he said. “But she told me numerous times… ‘you are in a dangerous job.’”
