Mick Jagger’s fiancée, ballerina Melanie Hamrick, describes feeling ‘shaken and heartbroken’ following a physical attack outside a private club in London’s Mayfair.
Details of the Incident
The 38-year-old shared her ordeal on Instagram Wednesday morning, explaining that two assailants grabbed her from behind near Annabel’s in Berkeley Square on Tuesday night. Friends intervened to protect her during the mugging.
In her post, Hamrick wrote: ‘This is incredibly hard to share, but I was physically attacked at Annabels Mayfair tonight. I’m so thankful to my friends for protecting me. Two people grabbed me from behind and thank god for good people who stepped in to help me. I’m shaken, sad and heartbroken that people can treat each other this way.’
Authorities confirm an investigation into the incident. Hamrick has been in a relationship with Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, 82, since 2014. The couple shares a young son, Devereux.
London’s Surge in Violent Crime
The attack coincides with escalating brazen thefts targeting luxury stores across the capital. Organized gangs smash windows with sledgehammers, ram vehicles through doors, and flee on motorbikes with high-value items like watches, handbags, and jewelry.
Recent incidents include:
- Hammer-wielding thieves targeting Gregory & Co, a family-run jeweler in Richmond, where they ransacked a window display in front of passersby.
- A moped gang hitting Bucherer Rolex Boutique at One Hyde Park, peeling away glass to steal valuables.
- Sultan Jewellery in Shepherd’s Bush suffering a sledgehammer raid, damaging shutters and scattering glass.
- Balaclava-clad robbers ramming an SUV into Yves St Laurent on Bond Street, escaping with up to £30,000 in luxury handbags.
Shopkeepers report shattered storefronts as a common sight amid these ‘smash-and-grab’ raids. Mission: Impossible star Tom Cruise recently vacated his £35 million apartment in One Hyde Park, citing a decline in area safety, close to the 63-year-old actor.
Mobile Phone Theft Epidemic
Concerns extend to a £50 million annual phone theft wave, with thieves on scooters snatching devices from pedestrians. Metropolitan Police data shows 66,528 phones stolen in London in the year to September 2024, including 22,253 in Westminster alone—85.4 incidents per 1,000 residents.
Among victims is Bridgerton actress Genevieve Chenneour, who suffered a concussion during a phone theft at a Kensington cafe. The Yorkshire-born star, who played Clara Livingston in season three, fought off 18-year-old thief Zacariah Boulares.
Chenneour stated: ‘They didn’t expect me to stand up for myself – but I did. I was left with a concussion just before the Screen Actors Guild Awards and since then, I’ve felt constantly on edge. Even my dog was traumatised—now, if anyone touches me, he panics and tries to protect me. Getting a coffee shouldn’t be something you need your wits about you for.’
Boulares pleaded guilty to the theft, common assault on another customer, and a separate handbag theft.
