Melanie Sykes Seen in Headscarf Amid Alopecia Battle

Published on

Melanie Sykes was photographed wearing a headscarf on Monday during a dog walk, marking her first public appearance since revealing a significant hair loss due to alopecia. The television personality, 55, appeared relaxed and stylish as she enjoyed a drink from Joe & The Juice, pairing a patterned scarf with a white t-shirt and casual trousers. She was seen doting on her Pembroke Welsh Corgi during the outing.

Melanie Sykes’ Alopecia Journey

Earlier this year, Sykes publicly shared her ongoing struggle with alopecia, stating she was “learning to live with loss.” She first disclosed her diagnosis in April 2025. The star, who also manages a heart condition that causes palpitations, has expressed gratitude for her health, noting that the remaining hair on her crown, though sparse, is healthy.

In a recent social media post, Sykes described the current state of her hair: “My crown is pretty much what’s left of my hair now and how healthy it is.” She acknowledged the need for headwear due to feeling cold, adding, “I’m learning to live with ‘loss’ and counting my blessings instead.” Sykes emphasized the practice of gratitude, stating, “It’s not always easy to be grateful, but it is the key to happiness and takes daily, moment-to-moment practice. Practice love.”

Embracing ‘Post-Traumatic Growth’

Sykes concluded 2025 with a positive health update, revealing she was experiencing what she termed “Post-Traumatic Growth.” She shared on Instagram that she was “vibrating high” after “transcending trauma” amidst her battle with the autoimmune condition, which has resulted in losing approximately two-thirds of her hair and experiencing widespread inflammation.

Post-Traumatic Growth is understood as the positive psychological changes some individuals undergo following a significant life crisis or traumatic event. Sykes has previously shown images of her head following substantial hair loss.

Reflecting on her experiences, Sykes stated, “Even the most difficult times do pass, they do, and I just want to use this term post traumatic growth, it’s real, you can be suffering from PTSD but still at the same time be experiencing post traumatic growth.” She elaborated on this duality: “I’m in both camps because you can be both things at once, as long as I attend to myself and what makes me happy and feel grief about whatever has gone on and process it and move on from it.” She confidently asserted, “We can transcend all trauma, we can be changed, and I am living f******g proof of that!” She captioned the post with a warm greeting, “Hello you beautiful people, sharing my high vibes today, Love always, Melanie x”.

Initial Disclosure and Health Concerns

Sykes, widely recognized for her role in the Boddingtons Bitter beer advertisements in the mid-1990s, first alluded to her hair loss in April 2025. She shared a side-profile photograph highlighting a bald patch, explaining at the time that she was in London investigating health issues. “I am experiencing alopecia and heart issues due to all that has happened over the last few months. PTSD, shock, mistreatment and malpractice,” the former television star revealed.

The star has also spoken about managing excessive inflammation throughout her body, a condition linked to her ongoing health challenges.

Focus on Self-Care and Healing

In the past year, Sykes has encouraged her followers not to be concerned about her well-being, emphasizing her commitment to self-care and healing. “Life is so good, and I know it because I’m right here right now and there’s nothing to fear. There is nothing to fear,” she stated.

She added, “The more I tune into faith, and believing that all is well because it is, because I’m experiencing it, so I know that it is, that it’ll only get better.” Sykes expressed a preference for shifting conversations away from her illnesses, saying, “We don’t need to bring that to the conversation.”

“It’s not like I’m hiding it, I’d just rather have a conversation about something else because I’ve got that down and I’m healing myself,” she explained. “Worry about yourselves, if anything, and I don’t even mean worry about yourselves, I just mean attend to your own spiritual garden, yourself, your body, your mind, your creative spirit.” She concluded with a message of self-reliance: “Don’t worry about me, I’ve got me, I’ve always got me, I’ve learned to really take care of myself in the last two years.”
