A 21-year-old college student from St. Peters, Missouri, has been found dead in Illinois following an intensive weeklong search. Melissa Oelke was discovered deceased on Saturday, one week after she was last seen leaving her home on March 26.
Details of Disappearance
Oelke left her residence around 7:30 a.m. on the day she vanished, leaving her cell phone behind. Authorities located an abandoned vehicle on Keck Road in St. Jacob, Illinois, shortly after noon that same day. Witnesses reported the car at approximately 12:30 p.m.
Her father, Gerald Oelke, explained that Melissa had been under stress following midterms at the College of Creative Studies, a private art and design institution in Detroit. He noted she extended her spring break to prioritize her mental health. On the morning of her disappearance, she visited several stores, including Target, Schnucks, and Walgreens.
Police described Oelke’s last known outfit as an olive-green hooded sweatshirt, denim jeans, and black athletic shoes. An alert highlighted her several medical conditions requiring ongoing attention, heightening concerns for her safety.
Search and Investigation
Rescue teams deployed K-9 units, drones, and aerial support in a massive effort to locate her. The investigation continues, with officials confirming no public threat exists.
