Mercedes Software Bug Costs Russell Duel with Leclerc

Published on

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff disclosed that an electrical fault forced George Russell to yield his position to Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and teammate Lewis Hamilton on lap 27. Russell fought back, reclaiming sixth from Hamilton on lap 43 and briefly pulling ahead of Leclerc at the final chicane with three laps remaining. However, Leclerc surged back past him on the main straight, denying Russell a stronger finish.

Safety Car Triggers Chaos

The afternoon turned frustrating for Russell after a safety car deployed on lap 22. Haas driver Ollie Bearman lost control while attempting a bold overtake on Alpine’s Franco Colapinto for 15th place at Suzuka’s Spoon Curve. Bearman veered onto the grass, crashed through polystyrene distance boards, and slammed into the barriers.

Marshals assisted Bearman from his car before he collapsed. Medical staff transported him to the trackside center for X-rays, which confirmed a right knee contusion.

Russell vented over team radio: “Unbelievable.” The safety car allowed Kimi Antonelli, running a net third, to pit for a free tire change and emerge at the front of the field. Russell followed up: “Wow. F***! Our luck in these last two races,” referencing a prior mechanical issue in China qualifying.

Wolff Details the Fault

Wolff explained the problem stemmed from a software bug in the electrical system, intended to provide Russell an advantage. Instead, it triggered an unexpected throttle clip that slowed the car, costing the position to Leclerc.

“It was a bug in the electrical system in the software to try to give him an advantage,” Wolff stated. “What it gave was a super clip that slowed the car down and this is where he unexpectedly lost the position to Leclerc.”

Antonelli Extends Dominance

Wolff praised Antonelli, who secured his second consecutive victory, widening Mercedes’ lead in the Constructors’ Championship and his advantage in the Drivers’ standings.

“It seemed like years ago when he was a kid,” Wolff reflected. “He met Mercedes technical director James Allison, who thought it was a kid who lost his parents and was looking for someone.”

“It’s incredible. Yesterday, he was 14 and today he was 19. He’s won two races in a row in F1 and we are really happy about the development that he’s taken. We need to protect him now from people talking about World Championships.”
