Australian Music Icon’s Wellbeing Under Scrutiny

Significant concerns are surfacing within Australia’s media landscape regarding the health of legendary music figure Molly Meldrum. Reports circulating within industry circles suggest his condition may be more serious than previously understood, with some individuals close to the situation expressing deep unease.

Long-Term Health Struggles

Meldrum, 83, has faced ongoing health challenges since a severe fall at his Melbourne residence in 2011. This incident profoundly impacted his life and led to a gradual withdrawal from public life. He now resides at home in Melbourne, reportedly under the care of his partner, Yan Wangngam, and receives visits from close friends.

In March, Meldrum’s long-time business manager, Mark Klemens, commented on his health, stating, “The reality is he’s had some issues. And he’s getting older – he’s 83 now – and, physically, he’s not as strong as he used to be. But he’s comfortable, and he’s happy. He hasn’t lost his razor-sharp wit, and he still has a drink. Life is just a lot quieter.”

Recent Public Absences Fuel Concerns

Whispers about Meldrum’s declining health gained traction in June 2024 when he was absent from the funeral of his friend and former colleague John Blackman. Further anxieties arose in October 2024, following the release of photographs shared by his partner, Yan, on social media. These images depicted a frail Meldrum, a stark contrast to his appearance at the Australian Open ten months prior.

One photograph showed Meldrum appearing to sleep on a couch at his home, without his signature hat. Another image captured him resting on his verandah, appearing bearded and with a hand resting on his chest.

A close acquaintance remarked at the time that Meldrum was “struggling” with his health and had largely retreated from public life. His absence from an event celebrating the 50th anniversary of ABC’s ‘Countdown,’ the show that propelled him to stardom, also surprised many associates.

The Impact of the 2011 Fall

Gavin Wood, the announcer for ‘Countdown,’ noted that Meldrum’s health has been affected since his fall from a ladder in December 2011, an incident that nearly cost him his life. Wood told the Herald Sun, “The fall, it is all down to the fall, was a horrible thing to have happened.”

‘Countdown,’ which aired from 1974 to 1987, is widely recognized as a testament to Meldrum’s vision and dedication.

Past Incidents and Public Scrutiny

Meldrum has largely remained out of the public eye since an incident in March 2023 at a Rod Stewart concert in Melbourne, where he appeared to expose himself and urinate on the floor. This event followed other notable public occurrences. In January 2023, Meldrum garnered attention for dropping his pants during Sir Elton John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour performance in Melbourne. While Meldrum attributed this to a wardrobe malfunction, footage later emerged of similar behavior at the 2022 ChillOut Festival in Daylesford, Victoria.
