Mother Recounts Finding Daughter’s Charred Remains in Halifax Walmart Oven

Mandip Kaur shares the devastating moment she discovered her 19-year-old daughter, Gursimran Kaur, burned to death inside a walk-in oven at a Halifax Walmart roughly 18 months ago. The tragedy unfolded on October 19, 2024, at the Mumford Road store in the city’s West End, where both mother and daughter worked.

The Horrifying Discovery

Unable to reach Gursimran by text or phone, Mandip grew concerned, assuming her daughter was assisting a customer or on break. After managers confirmed they had not seen her recently, the group searched the bakery area. A manager spotted a black-brown liquid resembling tar leaking from the oven’s back, later identified as fluid from Gursimran’s body positioned next to the baking racks.

“I opened the door and she was there,” Mandip Kaur stated. Overwhelmed, she collapsed to the floor and remained beside the unrecognizable remains for five to ten minutes. “Her body was not there,” she added. “I could not see her.” The sight caused her to hyperventilate. “Within seconds, my life has changed forever,” she said. Emergency responders soon arrived and removed her from the scene.

Investigation Findings

Halifax Police ruled the death non-suspicious one month later, noting that some questions may remain unanswered. Nova Scotia’s Department of Labour recently concluded its review, finding no safety violations. “Investigators determined the oven was in proper working order at the time of the incident, and no safety violations were identified that could have contributed to the worker’s death,” the department announced. Officials identified no broader safety issues with the oven type.

Family Seeks Answers

The family expresses dissatisfaction with the lack of concrete evidence explaining how Gursimran entered the oven, why she could not escape despite an internal exit mechanism, the duration of her ordeal, or her suffering. “After 18 months investigation, they are unable to discover what happened,” Mandip Kaur said. “They don’t know. They don’t have any proof. No solid results.”

Mandip had considered legal action against Walmart, but the labour department’s findings undermine such efforts. She firmly rejects suicide, describing Gursimran as a joyful valedictorian aspiring to study medicine. The night before, she laughed and celebrated at a family gathering, and a package she ordered arrived days after her death.

Following a service at their local gurdwara, the family returned to India, scattering Gursimran’s ashes in the ocean during a private ceremony. A GoFundMe campaign raised nearly $200,000 within 24 hours. The Walmart store closed for four months, underwent renovations, relocated the bakery, and installed non-walk-in ovens.
