Viewers of a popular property search program ed widespread disbelief following a couple’s “cheeky” negotiation tactic. During a recent rerun episode, participants John and Adele, seeking a holiday home in Murcia, Spain, submitted an offer that many considered significantly below market value.
Property Search in Murcia
The couple, with a budget of £100,000, were on the hunt for a two-bedroom property. Their key requirements included a mountain view and proximity to a golf course, with a preference for a bathtub or the potential to install one. After more than a decade together, John and Adele emphasized the importance of a spacious kitchen and the desired scenic outlook.
Presenter Ben Hillman guided them through five potential properties. One apartment situated on a golf resort, featuring a large terrace with impressive vistas, particularly caught their eye. Although the kitchen was described as compact, Hillman noted its potential for expansion by incorporating adjacent utility space.
The ‘Lowball’ Offer
The property was listed at a reduced price of £92,000, already under the couple’s initial budget. However, John and Adele decided to make a bold opening offer of £80,000. This move surprised Hillman, who revealed that the bid was insufficient and that the property had attracted considerable interest from other potential buyers.
Despite the initial rejection of their low offer, the couple engaged in further negotiations with the estate agent. Ultimately, they successfully secured the property for £85,840.
Viewer Reactions
The audacious offer sparked a strong reaction from viewers when the episode originally aired. Social media platforms were abuzz with astonishment. Many took to Twitter to voice their opinions.
One viewer commented, “A cheeky offer. Shock ….. #aplaceinthesun.” Another sarcastically remarked, “80k…the answer starts in F and ends in off #aplaceinthesun.” A third ed their frustration, stating, “80k? ! There is lowballing And then there is downright p***takery #aplaceinthesun.” A further comment questioned, “Is Adele taking the p***?? £80k.”
The program, which follows individuals and couples searching for properties abroad, continues to air weekdays at 3pm on Channel 4.
