Naomi Osaka Honors Allen Iverson with Striking US Open Ensemble

Published on

Naomi Osaka made a bold fashion statement at the US Open, paying tribute to NBA legend Allen Iverson with her distinctive on-court attire for her opening-round match. The tennis star, known for her creative style, appeared at Arthur Ashe Stadium clad in an ensemble that echoed Iverson’s iconic look, complete with his signature arm sleeves and headband. This fashion-forward choice, part of a Nike initiative to bridge tennis and basketball aesthetics for the tournament, immediately drew attention as Osaka faced unseeded Russian Anastasia Zakharova.

A Nod to ‘The Answer’

Osaka’s outfit featured a flowing, floor-length tulle skirt paired with a sleeveless hoodie. The grey sweatshirt was notably adorned with burnout newspaper clippings detailing her career achievements, giving it a distressed, artistic flair. This design choice directly referenced Allen Iverson, the celebrated former Philadelphia 76ers point guard, affectionately known as ‘The Answer.’ Iverson, a cultural icon, significantly influenced trends in both sports and fashion during his career.

The tennis star has previously expressed her admiration for Iverson, calling him a “trailblazer” and a role model. “He’s also someone that I look up to a lot, because he’s done a lot in fashion,” Osaka stated. “Whether it’s on purpose or not, he’s shifted the way that NBA players dress. I also think the whole conversation around clothes in sports, and also just expressing yourself through style, I feel like he’s someone that I look up to in that regard.”

Design Inspiration and Collaboration

The ensemble was a collaborative effort, with designers Téla D’Amore and Ev Bravado drawing inspiration from Iverson’s distinctive style, particularly his grey sweatsuits and his unconventional approach to athletic presentation. They described the look as referencing “his gray sweats and the nonconformist cadence with which he moved through the world as an athlete.” The designers noted the tight turnaround, working with images of Iverson wearing a headband to conceptualize the outfit within approximately 30 hours, with input from Osaka and her stylist, Law Roach.

Law Roach, who has also styled Zendaya, played a key role in curating Osaka’s pre-tournament looks. Before the main draw commenced, Osaka engaged in a series of photoshoots at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, showcasing various outfits in different locations, including the media room and player garden. One notable look featured an archival Spring/Summer 2003 Dolce & Gabbana dress, photographed amidst the press workroom’s desks and monitors.

Osaka’s History of Fashionable Statements

This latest ensemble continues Osaka’s trend of making significant fashion statements at major tournaments. Her appearances are often anticipated for their creativity and unique design elements, reflecting her personality and interests beyond the court.

  • Australian Open: For the season’s first Grand Slam, Osaka sported a wide-brimmed hat with a veil and parasol, followed by a frilled jacket and dress that some observers likened to a “jellyfish-inspired” look.
  • French Open: At Roland Garros, Osaka’s outfit included a flowing black skirt and corset made from upcycled Nike materials, preceding a shimmering gold dress inspired by the Eiffel Tower. Her first-round opponent, Laura Siegemund, commented on the fashion aspect, suggesting a focus on playing tennis over making a fashion statement, though others, like Donna Vekic, defended Osaka’s self-expression.
  • Wimbledon: Adhering to the tournament’s strict all-white dress code, Osaka collaborated with Japanese designer Hana Yagi on a kimono-inspired outfit. This creation featured embroidered cranes and cherry blossoms, bell-shaped sleeves, an obi belt, and a trailing tulle skirt, accented with traditional Japanese hair ornaments and pearl jewelry.

Osaka’s Perspective on Style and Expression

Despite the attention her outfits garner, Osaka maintains that her choices are not intended to make a specific statement but rather stem from personal enjoyment and self-expression. “Honestly, like, nothing I do, I do it to make a statement,” she explained. “I think it just ends up being that way. But I literally do the things that I love to do, and I feel like people relate to it, and I’m really glad and grateful for that, because I feel like the type of person I am, a lot of people can see themselves in me. I really, honestly, I love that about myself.”

She also shared insights into her pre-tournament photoshoots, describing how she enjoys exploring the grounds early in the morning before the crowds arrive. Her willingness to experiment with fashion, both on and off the court, has made her a notable figure in the intersection of sports and style, resonating with fans who appreciate her authenticity and creative flair.

Looking Ahead

While Osaka has previously indicated a desire to shift focus back to her tennis performance after major events, her engagement with fashion remains a significant part of her public persona. Her tribute to Allen Iverson at the US Open underscores her ability to connect cultural icons with her personal brand, creating memorable moments that extend beyond the competitive arena.
