A fatal house fire in Napanee, Ontario, claimed one life and left another person in critical condition late Saturday night.
Emergency Response
Officers from the Lennox and Addington County detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to a blaze at a residence on Switzerville Road shortly before 9:30 p.m. Firefighters were already on site, actively fighting the flames and reporting possible individuals trapped inside the structure.
Three men resided at the home. A 59-year-old man escaped by jumping from a second-floor balcony and was rushed to a hospital in critical condition. A 34-year-old man sustained minor injuries.
Discovery of Remains
Search efforts uncovered human remains within the burned home. Authorities have yet to confirm the identity of the remains, believed to belong to the missing 65-year-old resident. A postmortem examination will verify this.
Fire crews remained at the scene through the night to fully extinguish the fire and secure the area.
Ongoing Investigation
The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office has launched an inquiry into the fire’s origin and circumstances.
