All petrol and diesel drivers across the UK now operate under a major new fuel price reporting requirement that took effect in February. Motorists can access the government’s Fuel Finder tool to pinpoint the lowest pump prices nearby.
How the Fuel Finder Tool Operates
Fuel stations must submit price updates within 30 minutes of any changes for E5 or E10 unleaded petrol, diesel, and HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil). This system empowers drivers to identify cost-effective options quickly amid ongoing fuel market challenges.
Prime Minister Urges Adoption for Savings
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer encourages vehicle owners to utilize the “cheap fuel finder” scheme to reduce running costs.
Reported Challenges with the System
Despite its potential, the tool encounters operational hurdles. Drivers sometimes discover that advertised low prices lead to higher actual costs at stations. Analysis reveals that approximately 15% of participating retailers have submitted no price updates since launch, potentially misleading users on the cheapest local options.
Steve Gooding, director of the RAC Foundation, notes that the current service “falls far short of what’s needed,” calling for swift improvements.
Government Response and Projected Benefits
A Department for Energy Security and Net Zero spokesperson states: “We are acting at pace to ensure that all fuel retailers register and report prices on Fuel Finder. In the last week, we have secured Asda reporting their prices, and we are working with major search engines to integrate Fuel Finder data. Fuel Finder will play a crucial part in our work to tackle the cost-of-living head on, with potential savings for households who own a car of around £40 a year at the pump.”
