Newfoundland Premier Opposes National Gun Buyback Program Implementation

Published on

Newfoundland and Labrador’s Premier Tony Wakeham has taken a firm stance against implementing the federal government’s proposed gun buyback program in his province, marking a significant split from national policy initiatives.

Provincial Opposition to Federal Firearms Initiative

Speaking in advance of high-level discussions with other provincial leaders in Ottawa, Premier Wakeham expressed clear opposition to the controversial firearms program. While acknowledging areas of cooperation with the federal government, he emphasized this particular initiative faces resistance from his administration.

‘While there are numerous areas where we find common ground with the current government and the prime minister, the gun buyback program is not one of them,’ Wakeham stated, highlighting the growing tension between provincial and federal approaches to firearms management.

Provincial-Federal Relations

The premier’s position reflects broader discussions about provincial autonomy in implementing federal programs, particularly those related to firearms regulation. This stance could potentially influence other provinces’ approaches to the national buyback initiative.

Impact on Gun Owners

The federal buyback program, designed to remove certain classifications of firearms from circulation, has raised concerns among legal gun owners in Newfoundland and Labrador. The provincial government’s position suggests a preference for maintaining current firearms regulations within the province.

This development comes as provinces across Canada grapple with the implementation challenges and local implications of the federal firearms strategy, with Newfoundland and Labrador now positioning itself as a voice of opposition to the program.
