Nicole Kidman on Divorce: ‘It’s All New, Every Time!’

Published on

Nicole Kidman, a celebrated actress known for her boundary-pushing roles and advocacy for female creators, has reflected on how her high-profile marriages and subsequent divorces have shaped her life and career. In a recent interview, Kidman drew an unexpected parallel between her experiences navigating public scrutiny following her divorces from Tom Cruise and Keith Urban, suggesting that each marital dissolution brought its own unique set of challenges and perspectives.

Navigating Divorce in the Spotlight

Kidman, who was married to Tom Cruise from 1990 to 2001 and later to Keith Urban starting in 2006, discussed her approach to public perception during these significant life events. When asked if her divorce from Urban, finalized earlier this year, was easier to handle in the public eye after her split from Cruise, Kidman offered a candid and somewhat humorous response. “It’s all new. Every time!” she stated, accompanied by a laugh. This sentiment underscores the idea that despite having experienced intense media attention following her first high-profile divorce, each subsequent personal upheaval presented its own distinct emotional landscape.

The actress described the period following her divorce from the New Zealand-born musician as akin to “free-falling.” She elaborated on her personal philosophy, emphasizing a “feelings first” approach to life and major decisions. “I’ve approached my whole life like that,” Kidman explained. “That’s just who I am. I don’t overthink things and I’m probably not that analytical. I’m far more feeling-centered and I lead with my heart. I just go, ‘OK, what do I feel here? I’ll give it a go.'” While this intuitive approach has guided her, she also acknowledged experiencing phases of feeling “fearful and vulnerable” in the aftermath of her divorces.

A Lifetime Under Public Scrutiny

Despite the emotional toll of divorce, Kidman noted that being in the public eye was, paradoxically, the easiest aspect to manage. This perspective stems from her early immersion into intense celebrity culture. “But you have to remember literally, because of who I married at such a young age, I was thrust into it since I was 22,” she recalled. Her marriage to Tom Cruise, who was arguably the biggest movie star in the world at the time of their 1990 wedding, catapulted her into a level of fame she was still navigating as a young adult.

“My life has been more time like that than not,” Kidman continued. “My memory of it not being that is quite blurry, because I was really young.” She vividly remembers the whirlwind romance and marriage. “Suddenly I was 22, 23 years old and I had this huge movie star husband.” The connection was immediate and profound: “But it just seemed completely natural. We just fell madly in love and it was that simple.”

Prioritizing Love Over Career Early On

In her early twenties, Kidman’s commitment to her relationship with Cruise was so strong that she was prepared to sacrifice her burgeoning career. “I remember people saying to me, ‘OK, well this is really going to affect your career.’ I’m like, ‘I don’t care. I’m in love. I want to be married,'” she recounted. This sentiment highlights a period where personal happiness and romantic fulfillment took precedence over professional ambitions. She was willing to be known primarily as “Mrs. Cruise,” even when faced with skepticism about her career prospects.

“And then I was his ‘wife’ and they were like, ‘See, we told you,'” Kidman recalled. “I’m like, ‘So what? I wasn’t meant to marry the man I love? Of course I’ll throw my career away. I don’t care.'” While she starred in significant films during her marriage, including mainstream successes like Batman Forever and To Die For (both 1995), Practical Magic (1998), and Eyes Wide Shut (1999), it was the period immediately following her divorce from Cruise that truly cemented her status as an independent Hollywood force.

Post-Divorce Triumphs and Evolving Identity

The years after her divorce from Tom Cruise saw Nicole Kidman achieve critical acclaim and solidify her career trajectory. Amidst the lingering perception of being “Mrs. Cruise,” she delivered a series of powerful performances that silenced any doubters. Back-to-back successes in Moulin Rouge!, The Others, and The Hours marked a new era for the actress. Her role in The Hours earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress, a testament to her individual talent and artistic evolution.

Kidman’s reflections suggest a consistent thread of prioritizing emotional truth and personal connection throughout her life, regardless of the public stage. Her willingness to embrace vulnerability and lead with her heart, while acknowledging the accompanying fears, paints a picture of an artist deeply attuned to her inner world. The enduring public interest in her personal life, juxtaposed with her significant professional achievements, continues to define her narrative, showing a woman who has navigated fame, love, and loss with remarkable resilience and a unique, feeling-centered perspective.
