Noah Wyle, star of the medical drama The Pitt, advocates for a UK-style National Health Service in the United States. He shared these views while promoting the series at the HBO Max streaming service launch in London on Tuesday, March 24.
The Pitt Explores US Healthcare Challenges
In The Pitt, Wyle portrays a doctor navigating a grueling 15-hour shift at a fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Centre. Each episode unfolds over one hour of the shift, highlighting modern issues in America’s privatized healthcare system.
Contrasting this with the UK’s NHS, which delivers free healthcare to all, Wyle criticizes the current US model. “Our system at the moment is laden with the insurance companies being the intermediary … and care being predicated by the algorithm that the insurance company dictates,” he stated. “So it’s really become a profit-driven, quality-of-care-diminishing system. And I think it’s really enviable that that’s not part of your conversation. I personally think we need some sort of national healthcare service in the United States. We need universal coverage for everybody.”
Show’s Enduring Appeal
Wyle highlighted the series’ potential for longevity, noting that season two proves its strength lies in realistic storytelling. “One of the gratifying things about season two is that we realised that we don’t need a big deus ex machina plot device to keep this engaging,” he explained. “That there is something really fascinating about watching everyday people try to get through the course of their day, beset by all the trials and tribulations that come over the course of their day. If that is satisfying television, then this show could run forever.”
The latest episode addresses US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), sparking varied responses from viewers.
