Nova 106.9 Axes Mitch Lewis After 18 Years, Staff Stunned

Mitch Lewis, a beloved sports presenter at Nova 106.9 in Brisbane, has been let go after 18 years with the station. Known for his humorous ‘Mitch on the Street’ segments, Lewis built a strong fan base and served as the longtime anchor for the breakfast show, most recently The Nick, Luttsy & Susie O’Neill Show.

Nova’s Official Statement

Nova management confirmed the unexpected redundancy. A spokesperson stated, ‘Mitch has made a valued contribution during his time with Nova 106.9, and we thank him for his commitment to the station and our listeners. We wish Mitch all the very best for the future.’

Lewis Reflects on His Tenure

Lewis expressed gratitude for his time at the station. ‘I loved every day working for Nova for the last 18 years, and I’m looking forward to what the next opportunity brings,’ he said.

Colleague Pays Tribute

Nova Brisbane newsreader Ange Anderson shared a heartfelt message. ‘Having sat next to Mitch for a decade, you won’t find a more decent and loyal human!’ she posted. ‘Enjoy the sleep-ins, mate, they’re bliss.’

Lewis, son of NRL legend Wally Lewis, is a father of four with wife Sarah. Their family includes daughter Sophie, born in June 2021, and sons James, William, and Luke. He will continue his role as on-field presenter for the NRL’s Brisbane Broncos.

Wave of Layoffs at Nova

Lewis’ departure follows a series of staff cuts at Nova over the past year. Former hosts Ben Harvey and Liam Stapleton, along with co-host Belle Jackson, were let go in September when their contracts ended. The trio hosted The Late Drive.

Rival Australian Radio Network (ARN) announced in October that Ben and Liam would lead the breakfast show on KIIS FM Adelaide (formerly Mix 102.3), with Belle as producer. Their final Nova airdate was set for December 12, but they were removed immediately after the news broke, with their last show on October 24.

The duo revealed surprise at Nova enforcing a non-compete clause, barring them from broadcasting elsewhere for six months. ‘We didn’t think they would, but then they did,’ Liam stated. He added, ‘We’re here now [at KIIS 102.3], and we’re ready to give it a red hot crack.’
