P.E.I. Faces Heavy Snow and Strong Winds Starting Sunday

Published on

Residents in central and eastern Prince Edward Island prepare for challenging weather conditions from Sunday evening through Monday afternoon, with significant snowfall and gusty winds expected.

Weather Alert Issued for Key Counties

Environment Canada has released a special weather statement for Queens and Kings counties, highlighting risks of heavy snow and powerful winds. In the eastern sections of Kings County, accumulations could reach 10 to 20 centimetres, accompanied by northeasterly gusts between 60 and 80 kilometres per hour.

The alert warns that travel will worsen Sunday evening as snow builds up, winds intensify, and blowing snow reduces visibility. Officials note the potential for utility disruptions in affected regions, where snowfall totals of 10 to 20 centimetres are anticipated overall.

Meteorologist’s Forecast and Precautions

P.E.I. meteorologist Jay Scotland indicates that the storm’s projected track directs the heaviest impacts to the south and east of the province. Western areas may escape major snowfall but could still see northeasterly to northerly winds causing snow drifts and reduced visibility.

“Residents should gear up for hazardous roads and limited sightlines from Sunday night into Monday afternoon,” Scotland advised. Blizzard-like conditions remain possible, with wind gusts potentially exceeding 80 km/h during this period.
