P.E.I. Greens Lead in New Poll, MacFarlane Top Premier Choice

Published on

A recent poll indicates that the Green Party of Prince Edward Island is the preferred political choice among Islanders, with party leader Matt MacFarlane also emerging as the top selection for premier. The survey, conducted by Narrative Research, suggests a significant shift in public sentiment, though political analysts caution against viewing the results as a definitive election prediction.

Green Party Emerges as Top Choice in Provincial Poll

According to data collected between June 10 and June 17, the Green Party garnered 40 percent support when Islanders were asked how they would vote if an election were held immediately. This places the Green Party ahead of other major political forces in the province. The survey involved 147 participants responding to an online poll, a method that differs from Narrative Research’s previous approaches.

The poll also revealed that 26 percent of respondents remained undecided about their voting intentions. Following the Green Party, the P.E.I. Liberal Party secured 19 percent support, the Progressive Conservatives received 13 percent, and the New Democratic Party (NDP) garnered two percent. Notably, the survey did not provide a margin of error for its findings.

Matt MacFarlane Preferred as Premier

Beyond party affiliation, the poll delved into public preference for the next premier. Green Party Leader Matt MacFarlane emerged as the leading candidate, chosen by 51 percent of respondents. This figure significantly outpaces other party leaders, with PC Leader Rob Lantz receiving 11 percent and Liberal Leader Robert Mitchell obtaining 10 percent support.

Expert Analysis on Poll Results

Don Desserud, a political science professor at the University of Prince Edward Island, described the poll as a potential “morale boost” for the Green Party. However, he stressed that such results should be interpreted with caution, advising against seeing them as a direct forecast for the next provincial election. Desserud noted that voter behavior can shift significantly as an election nears, with individuals often reverting to established voting patterns.

“When it gets real, people sort of shift back to older voting habits,” Desserud explained. “But this has got to be something that [the Greens] can see as something to build on.” He suggested that the Green Party’s current appeal might stem from voters seeking leadership and a fresh alternative, particularly during times when they feel existing leadership is lacking.

Desserud further commented on the leadership aspect, stating, “This is about people who are looking for something that’s compatible, looking for leadership at a time when they’re thinking they’re not getting leadership and are willing to look at the Greens and give them a chance.” He advised the Green Party to identify the specific elements of their platform or approach that are resonating with voters and to focus on these strengths without alienating potential supporters.

Reactions from Political Parties

Matt MacFarlane expressed that the poll results reflect the effectiveness of his party’s efforts, stating, “A couple of polls now in a row have consistently shown that Islanders are seeing that the work the Green Party and I are doing is the work that they want to see being done.” He added that he frequently hears from constituents who appreciate having a voice and perceive the Green Party as representing Islanders’ interests, finding the poll’s reflection of this sentiment “humbling.”

Conversely, the P.E.I. Liberal Party expressed skepticism regarding the poll’s findings. In a statement, the party indicated that their own internal surveys show “sharp variance” with Narrative Research’s data. They asserted their confidence in the Liberal Party’s strong position and their suitability to form the next government.

The governing Progressive Conservative party also questioned the poll’s validity, noting that “no single survey tells the whole story.” Their statement highlighted the challenges inherent in accurately polling in Prince Edward Island and pointed to the “significant limitations” of an online survey with a small respondent pool.

Challenges and Future Outlook

Desserud acknowledged the small sample size of 147 respondents, calling it “a very, very small sample size.” Nevertheless, he suggested that the results could signal “something exciting going on” with the Green Party in the eyes of the electorate. He advised the Liberal and PC parties to analyze how they can regain public attention and engagement.

The political landscape in Prince Edward Island remains dynamic, with the next provincial election constitutionally mandated to occur by October 2027, though an earlier election is possible. The current poll, despite its limitations, offers a snapshot of public opinion and highlights the Green Party’s current standing as a significant political force in the province.

The poll’s methodology, relying on an opt-in online survey, is a departure from previous practices and may influence the interpretation of its results. The lack of a stated margin of error further complicates definitive conclusions. However, the data presented offers valuable insights into current voter preferences and the potential trajectory of P.E.I. politics.
