PGA Tour Plans Schedule Revamp and Deeper DP World Tour Ties

Published on

PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp emphasizes extending the Strategic Alliance with the DP World Tour to foster greater mutual benefits. Established in 2020, the partnership promotes collaboration on commercial opportunities and provides 10 PGA Tour cards through the DP World Tour’s Race to Dubai rankings. Players like Bob MacIntyre have earned spots on the PGA Tour in recent years.

Valuing the Partnership

During a discussion at PGA Tour headquarters in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, Rolapp highlighted the alliance’s significance. DP World Tour chief executive Guy Kinnings and chairman Eric Nicoli attended the session.

“The Strategic Alliance predates me, but the importance of the European Tour and its history with the PGA Tour stands out,” Rolapp stated. “We value this alliance, as do many members. We proposed ways to extend it for even more mutual benefits.”

This marked Rolapp’s first media address during Players Championship week since succeeding Jay Monahan last year.

International Focus

Rolapp outlined an international dimension to his PGA Tour vision, beyond targeting major U.S. cities like New York, Boston, and Chicago. The Genesis Scottish Open remains the tour’s largest non-U.S. event, co-hosted with the DP World Tour.

“Do not view this as limited to the U.S.,” he said. “Most events will stay domestic due to business realities, but we aim to expand internationally, especially in fall slots. Expect international elements even in summer schedules. It’s a top priority after core planning.”

Schedule Shake-Up with Promotion and Relegation

With Tiger Woods chairing the Future Competition Committee, Rolapp revealed plans for a promotion and relegation system akin to European football. The revamped schedule targets 16 Signature Events—double the current number—with 120-player fields and 36-hole cuts.

Including majors and playoffs, top-track players face 21-26 events. A parallel second track culminates in an end-of-season tournament deciding promotion and relegation.

“We aim to elevate both tracks,” Rolapp clarified. “This creates a cohesive system that boosts overall competition quality, not a hierarchy.”

The core calendar spans late January to early September, kicking off at an iconic West Coast venue. Rolapp also teased match-play integration in playoffs for added excitement.

“Fans and partners crave more drama,” he noted. “We’re exploring match play at the Tour Championship or across the postseason for win-or-go-home stakes.”
