Oscar Piastri, the 25-year-old Australian motorsport sensation, emerges as a prime candidate to replace Max Verstappen at Red Bull amid swirling uncertainty over both drivers’ futures.
Piastri’s Stellar Record at McLaren
Piastri remains under contract with McLaren through the end of 2028. He has secured nine victories for the team and contributed significantly to their back-to-back constructors’ championships.
In the 2025 World Drivers’ Championship, Piastri finished third overall. He led the standings for much of the season, clinching seven wins. His 2026 campaign started with challenges, including two Did Not Finishes, but he has bounced back strongly with consecutive podiums in Japan and Miami.
Verstappen’s Uncertain Path
Max Verstappen’s next steps remain unclear. Speculation links the Dutch driver to McLaren, Ferrari, or even retirement, fueled by his outspoken criticism of the 2026 Formula 1 regulations.
Should Verstappen depart, Red Bull faces the task of finding a new team leader. Piastri stands out as the top choice ahead of current reserve Isack Hadjar.
Previous Interest from Red Bull
Red Bull has long admired Piastri. Former team principal Christian Horner openly expressed regret over missing the chance to sign him years ago.
Recent indications suggest Piastri harbors reservations about McLaren’s current direction, making a potential move plausible.
‘Piastri would find a seat anywhere,’ stated former Williams driver Juan Pablo Montoya. ‘There’s a suggestion that Max and Piastri could do a straight swap.’
