Correctional Staff Member Sentenced for Illegal Relationship
A 27-year-old prison officer has been sentenced to two-and-a-half years imprisonment after engaging in a prohibited relationship with a convicted gang member while employed at HMP Lindholme in South Yorkshire. Charlotte Winstanley admitted to misconduct in a public office following a three-year affair with inmate Jabhari Blair, 30, who is serving a 13-year sentence for violent offenses.
Forbidden Relationship Details
Court documents reveal Winstanley began monitoring Blair in August 2022 while assigned to the facility’s J Wing. Their relationship escalated to include clandestine meetings in prison offices and explicit digital communication through a smuggled mobile device. Investigators uncovered messages where Winstanley expressed desires to bear Blair’s children, writing “I’m literally praying to have your baby” in one exchange.
The illicit relationship continued even after Winstanley’s suspension from duty in November 2022, with the former officer registering to visit Blair at HMP Ranby and creating a fake email account to maintain contact.
Contraband Smuggling Operation
Evidence presented in Sheffield Crown Court showed Winstanley facilitated unauthorized item transfers, including SIM cards, SD cards, and other electronics requested through Argos purchases. Officials confirmed she shared confidential prison information with Blair, including details about inmate medical records, cell raids, and potential transfer plans.
Surveillance footage captured multiple instances of the pair entering restricted areas together, including one incident where they spent 14 minutes alone in an office before Winstanley’s shift officially began.
Legal Proceedings and Sentencing
Judge Jeremy Richardson KC described the case as exceptionally severe among similar misconduct incidents he’s adjudicated. “The corruption went from bad to worse and lasted for a protracted period,” Richardson stated during sentencing. “You chose the wrong path knowing it was unlawful and corrupt.”
Blair received an additional 13-month sentence for possession of contraband items related to the case. Both defendants received sentence reductions due to procedural delays in prosecution.
Prison Service Response
This marks the latest in a series of staff misconduct cases at HMP Lindholme. Last year, another correctional officer from the same facility received a 10-month sentence for inappropriate relations with an inmate. Prison authorities have implemented enhanced staff monitoring protocols following these incidents.
Winstanley’s legal representation stated she expressed “deep remorse” for her actions during court proceedings. The disgraced officer will serve her sentence in a civilian correctional facility separate from her former workplace.
