The PlayStation 6 emerges as a powerhouse in leaked specifications, targeting 4K resolution at 120 frames per second. Although Sony has not officially unveiled the console, expected in a couple of years, industry insider Moore’s Law is Dead reveals impressive graphical capabilities that surpass the current generation.
Performance Benchmarks
Leaks indicate the PS6 supports 4K gaming at 120fps, optimized for modern 120Hz televisions. “Sony designs this console for TVs, which will feature 120Hz as standard for years,” Moore’s Law is Dead states.
Beyond resolution and frame rates, advancements focus on ray tracing and AI. While rasterization sees modest gains over the PS5, ray tracing and AI performance improve by hundreds of times. The console also introduces PSSR 3 upscaling, enabling lower internal resolutions upscaled to sharp 4K output.
Launch Timeline Amid Challenges
A global RAM shortage once raised concerns of delays to 2028 or 2029, allowing component costs to stabilize. However, Sony adheres to its late 2027 or early 2028 target. Consoles were designed years ago, with binding contracts to AMD and TSMC for chips and parts.
“Paying premium RAM prices for the first six months outweighs any delay. Contracts with AMD and TSMC lock in the schedule,” the insider explains. This s the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S launches in 2020, which proceeded despite COVID-19 disruptions and higher costs.
Competitor Insights
Design details for the PS6 remain under wraps. Meanwhile, Microsoft hints at its next console, codenamed Project Helix, supporting both PC games and native Xbox titles.
