A 33-year-old man from Queensland faces a foreign incursion charge for allegedly planning to join the fight in Myanmar’s ongoing civil war.
Travel and Arrest Details
Authorities indicate the man traveled to Thailand in January with intentions to cross into Myanmar and take part in hostile activities alongside an armed group active in the conflict.
He was charged after arriving at Brisbane Airport on Wednesday. Following his arrival, the Australian Federal Police and Queensland Police carried out a search warrant at his home in Rockhampton.
Evidence Uncovered
Australian Border Force officers inspected his luggage at the airport and discovered night-vision equipment along with military patches. Electronic devices contained material relevant to the joint counter-terrorism team.
Court Proceedings
The man appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court today and remains in custody. His next court date is scheduled for May. The foreign incursion offense carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
