Racing Bulls Executive Addresses Speculation Surrounding Driver Lineup
Alan Permane, a key figure at Racing Bulls, has moved to decisively address recent speculation regarding the future of driver Liam Lawson. Reports circulating in recent days had suggested that Lawson, a New Zealander, might be replaced on the Formula 1 grid. These rumors reportedly originated from a Spanish sports publication and proposed that Nikola Tsolov, a promising Bulgarian driver within the Red Bull junior program, could take Lawson’s place.
Tsolov’s Progress and Rumor Mill
Tsolov, currently 19 years old, has been making significant strides in Formula 2 this season, securing three victories at that level and positioning himself as a contender for the championship. This success has fueled discussions about his potential progression into Formula 1. The alleged Spanish report claimed that Red Bull had already secured a seat for Tsolov with the junior outfit Racing Bulls for the 2027 season. Such a move would have put Lawson’s position in jeopardy, particularly given the limited availability of other junior seats and the likelihood of retaining other promising talents like Isack Hadjar and Arvid Lindblad.
Permane’s Firm Reassurance
However, Permane has been quick to dismiss any suggestions of driver changes. Speaking at the Austrian Grand Prix, the Racing Bulls team principal stated his strong satisfaction with his current driver pairing. “I am very happy with both of them,” Permane affirmed. “They are performing exactly as we expect and are focused, working diligently, and delivering on track, which is ultimately the most crucial aspect.”
Direct Response to Rumors
When questioned by Sky Sports presenter Natalie Pinkham about the veracity of the rumors concerning Nikola Tsolov, Permane offered a direct rebuttal. “They are simply rumors. Honestly, we have not even contemplated such a discussion,” he stated unequivocally.
While acknowledging Tsolov’s development, Permane reiterated his current stance. “Of course, he is part of the Red Bull program and performing very well in F2,” Permane conceded when asked if Tsolov is on his radar. “However, I am extremely satisfied with the two drivers I have at this moment. There is absolutely no discussion about any changes at present.”
Lawson’s Career Trajectory
It is noteworthy that Tsolov does not yet possess an FIA superlicence, making him ineligible for practice sessions. Ayumu Iwasa, a Japanese Super Formula driver, participated in Lawson’s car during FP1 at the Red Bull Ring. Lawson, 24, has accumulated 42 Formula 1 starts throughout a career marked by intermittent opportunities. He initially stepped in for five races in 2023 to cover for an injured Daniel Ricciardo, later replacing the Australian for his first full-time drive a year later. He was subsequently promoted to the senior Red Bull team for the 2025 season following Sergio Perez’s departure, but his tenure as Max Verstappen’s teammate was brief, lasting only two race weekends before a reassignment. He has since secured his seat for 2026 and has demonstrated strong performance this season, accumulating 28 points in the opening seven rounds, placing him 10th in the drivers’ championship and contributing to Racing Bulls’ efforts to compete with rivals Alpine for fifth place in the constructors’ standings.
