Rangers manager Derek McInnes has acknowledged the growing frustration among the club’s supporters following a difficult start to the season, but has urged them to remain patient and supportive as the team navigates a period of transition. The club faces mounting pressure after early exits from European competition and a faltering start in the domestic league, leaving fans demanding an immediate improvement in performance.

Fan Expectations and Manager’s Response

Speaking ahead of a crucial Premier Sports Cup tie against St Mirren, McInnes recognized that supporters are entitled to expect a strong showing, especially after recent setbacks. The team has been eliminated from the Europa League and currently trails rivals Celtic in the Premiership standings after dropping points in their opening matches. A home defeat to Hibernian and a draw against Dundee United have amplified concerns, with the aggregate loss to Jagiellonia Bialystok in European qualification further darkening the mood at Ibrox.

McInnes stated, “I think they need to see something to get behind. And they need to see action. They need to see a team who are better than what they were [on Thursday].” He admitted that while no one is asking for blind understanding, the current situation warrants the venting of frustration. “It’s been more than just these four games that the frustration starts to build. And it’s somewhere to vent that. But they should be seeing a better performance, and we’ll aim to give them that.”

Despite the challenges, the manager emphasized his commitment to the long-term vision. “It’s not been the start we wanted but the intention is still to have the outcome that we want it to come before the season. We’re still working hard towards that, and we’ve got money to spend. We’ve got good ownership.” He also highlighted the presence of many younger players in the squad, suggesting that with “a wee bit of help” and successful recruitment, the team can achieve its goals.

Transfer Market Setbacks and Injury Woes

The task of rebuilding and improving the squad has been compounded by significant injury problems and failed transfer targets. Youssef Chermiti is out for the season with an ACL injury, and left-back Tuur Rommens faces an extended period on the sidelines with a groin issue. These setbacks have hampered McInnes’s plans, especially with a sequence of home matches intended to galvanize his tenure. He admitted to tactical challenges, noting, “Yeah, there was a wee bit of square pegs and round holes again [versus Jagiellonia]. No natural left back to play. McInnes candidly assessed the team’s performance, stating, “I think what we saw towards the end of the game was a lot of inexperience in the team.” He believes his primary role is to nurture these young players’ development. “It’s my job to try and help these boys perform better, and I do think with some additions in terms of balance and in terms of quality it would certainly help. I think a blind man can see that. We’ve got the basis of a good squad here, but to get the best from them, getting a few more in would help.”

“I’ve watched them in the last couple of games,” McInnes revealed. “Obviously they’ve changed how they want to play this season. They stayed up by the skin in their teeth last season, and you have to say they’ve had two strong performances so far. There’s a lot of players there that I know, and I’ve got a good idea of how they want to play the game come Sunday.” He anticipates a confident St Mirren side, buoyed by recent successes.

The manager concluded by reiterating the importance of the upcoming match. “We’ll see who’s fit and available, see if there’s any new additions that can come in and help the team. And just go and deal with the cup tie. We could do with just winning a game and getting a wee bit of confidence into the lads and getting a wee bit more optimism into the support.” The focus remains on securing wins to build momentum and improve the team’s standing, both on the pitch and in the eyes of their supporters.
