Real Madrid’s Record Bid for Julian Alvarez Turned Down
Real Madrid has confirmed that its record-breaking €150 million (£129.4 million) offer for Julian Alvarez has been rejected by Atletico Madrid. This significant bid was aimed at securing the highly-rated player, who is also a target for Arsenal and Barcelona.
President Pledged Ambitious Signing
Prior to his re-election as Real Madrid’s president, Florentino Perez had publicly stated his intention to submit a club-record offer for a prominent player. “On Tuesday or so, I’m going to make an offer to a major Champions League club for a great player. It would be the largest transfer fee Real Madrid has ever paid in its history,” Perez announced last Thursday.
When pressed for details on the target, Perez clarified that it was not Michael Olise or Jeremy Doku. He further indicated that the player would be a midfielder capable of attacking and would not be from the Premier League. “We’re going to make a significant offer, at least around €150m (£129.4m),” Perez added. He emphasized that the club would first engage in discussions with the player’s current team, highlighting the intention to make a signing that would generate considerable excitement.
Alvarez Sought by Multiple Clubs
Real Madrid has now revealed that Julian Alvarez is the player in question. The Argentine international is also a subject of interest from Arsenal and Barcelona. Earlier, Real Madrid had a €100 million (£86.4 million) offer for Alvarez declined.
Initial discussions have reportedly taken place between Arsenal and Alvarez. However, the player is reportedly favoring a move to Barcelona and is not considering a return to the Premier League, having left Manchester City two years ago.
Official Statement on Rejected Offer
In a statement released on Tuesday evening, Real Madrid announced: “Real Madrid CF announces that, following today’s Board of Directors meeting, it has made an offer of 150 million euros to Club Atlético de Madrid for the federative rights of the player Julián Álvarez.”
The statement continued: “After studying and evaluating it, Atlético de Madrid has thanked the club for the offer, made within the framework of the good relations existing between both clubs, and has rejected it, referring to the player’s release clause.”
