Reece Walsh Pushes Car Despite Broken Cheekbone After Broncos Victory

Published on

Brisbane Broncos star Reece Walsh demonstrated remarkable grit by assisting a group of men to push-start their broken-down ute in a car park, shortly after hospitalization for a fractured cheekbone sustained in his side’s 26-12 derby win over the Gold Coast Titans.

Injury Sustained in Milestone Match

Walsh marked his 100th NRL appearance with a spectacular try just three minutes into the game, bombing from 15 meters and regathering amid defenders. Near halftime, he suffered a concussion while tackling Titans forward Kurtis Morrin, followed by the facial fracture. A category-one Head Injury Assessment sidelined him for the remainder of the match.

Broncos coach Michael Maguire expressed concern post-game: “Reece has gone to hospital to get a scan just below his eye so we will have to wait and see on that.” Scans confirm the 23-year-old requires surgery and faces up to six weeks on the sidelines, ruling him out of Friday’s clash against North Queensland at Suncorp Stadium.

Post-Hospital Heroics

While receiving treatment, Walsh used a ‘green whistle’ device delivering methoxyflurane pain relief and filmed the moment, later deleting the clip from social media. Undeterred by the injury, visible on his face, he then helped push the stranded vehicle, urging “come on the boys” as it roared to life.

Other Broncos Injuries

Captain Adam Reynolds exited early with a groin strain, replaced by Ben Hunt, who battled through a knee issue. Hunt commented in the dressing room: “Early mail from the doc at halftime is he thinks I’ve stretched my medial a little bit. I’ll go and catch up with him now.” Reynolds plans scans to assess the damage.

Match Highlights

The Titans led a fierce contest, trailing 8-6 at halftime. Brisbane’s Ezra Mam and Kotoni Staggs shone in the second half. A lapse allowed Staggs to collect a Ben Hunt bomb, leading to tries by Xavier Willison and Gehamat Shibasaki, pushing the score to 16-6.

Gold Coast suffered heartbreak when A.J. Brimson’s try was disallowed due to a forward pass from Lachlan Ilias. Jesse Arthars, shifted to fullback after Walsh’s departure, scored soon after. Titans coach Josh Hannay reflected: “It is a hard game and when you earn your opportunity and ice it, and it gets taken away, it is frustrating for the players. You have got to try and brush that and we just didn’t… so that’s a learn for us and a work-on.”

Walsh nearly added another highlight, racing 90 meters to beat four defenders, but stepped into touch. The victory propelled the defending premiers into the top eight for the first time this season.
