Ronnie O’Sullivan Needs More Matches for Eighth World Snooker Title

Published on

Ronnie O’Sullivan demonstrated his enduring talent during two strong showings at the World Snooker Championship, proving he retains the skill and flair to claim victory in the sport’s premier event. However, analysis indicates he must increase his tournament participation to secure an eighth world title.

O’Sullivan’s Championship Performance

O’Sullivan delivered impressive snooker in his second-round clash with John Higgins, an epic battle that ended in a 13-12 defeat during the final session. Despite moments of brilliance, he faltered when victory hung in the balance, highlighting the need for sharper competitive edge.

The Matchplay Gap

Prior to the Crucible, O’Sullivan competed in just 10 matches throughout the 2026 season—a figure insufficient for peak preparation. While he once took nearly an entire season off in 2012-13 and still triumphed as a player in his 30s, the demands differ now in his 50s. Regular battle-tested play remains irreplaceable, even for the sport’s elite.

In contrast, Higgins arrived battle-hardened, having defeated Mark Williams 10-8 and Mark Selby 10-8 at the Tour Championship in Manchester. O’Sullivan withdrew from that event and managed only two multi-session matches all season, both resulting in losses.

Tournament Schedule Challenges

O’Sullivan has downplayed suggestions that his time in Dubai and Ireland stems from tax considerations, yet his limited presence in the UK coincides with most tournaments occurring there. This scarcity of domestic events poses a key hurdle for his Crucible aspirations.

Legacy and Future Ambitions

Already hailed as snooker’s greatest player, O’Sullivan’s record includes seven world titles, matching Stephen Hendry’s mark from the 1990s. His stated goal remains an eighth crown to surpass that benchmark. While he will likely select events selectively next season, more consistent tournament snooker offers the best path to Sheffield success.
