Rory McIlroy Ties for Masters Lead After Stellar Opening 67

The Masters Tournament captivates fans with its unchanging traditions and iconic Augusta National layout, from the vibrant greens to the sparkling waters of the 12th hole. Rory McIlroy, last year’s champion, embodies this familiarity by tying for the lead at 5-under par after the opening round.

McIlroy Overcomes Nerves for Strong Finish

McIlroy teed off under sunny skies but felt familiar nerves on the first hole, struggling to balance the ball. “That’s a good thing. That’s why we want to be here,” he said afterward. “We want to be able to try to play our best golf when we’re feeling like that.”

Despite a non-vintage start, McIlroy stayed even through seven holes before surging with five birdies over the final 11. He expected a 2-under score but reached 5-under by avoiding compounded errors and excelling in up-and-downs. “I used my head… I got up-and-down when I needed to,” McIlroy explained. “I didn’t compound mistakes. Again, that’s just a learning curve that you have to go through around here, and I did it well today.”

Sam Burns Matches McIlroy’s Pace

American Sam Burns matched McIlroy’s 67 in his fifth Masters appearance, boasting the field’s best approach play. As a rising talent alongside Ludvig Aberg, Tom Kim, and Akshay Bhatia, Burns positions himself for a potential major breakthrough.

Contenders Lurk Close Behind

Justin Rose, last year’s playoff runner-up to McIlroy, faltered with late bogeys to finish at 2-under, joining Scottie Scheffler, Shane Lowry, and Xander Schauffele in that group, three strokes back.

McIlroy credits his prior victory for building confidence. “I do think winning a Masters makes it easier to win your second one. I do,” he stated. “It’s hard to say because there’s still shots out there that you feel a little bit tight with, and you just have to stand up and commit to making a good swing and not worry about really where it goes. But I think it’s easier for me to make those swings and not worry about where it goes when I know that I can go back to the Champions Locker Room afterwards and put my green jacket on.”

With experience at Augusta, McIlroy holds a clear edge as the tournament progresses toward Sunday’s finale.
