Ross ‘The Boss’ Friedman Dies at 72 After ALS Diagnosis

Published on

Legendary guitarist Ross Friedman, widely known as ‘Ross the Boss,’ has passed away at age 72, just weeks after receiving a diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Pioneering Career in Rock and Metal

Friedman played a key role in shaping New York City’s punk rock scene as a founding member and guitarist of The Dictators, formed in 1973. His career took a heavy metal turn in 1980 when he met bassist Joey DiMaio during a Black Sabbath tour, leading to the creation of Manowar.

Recent Health Battle

The diagnosis came after months of symptoms, including weakness in his hands and legs. Initial suspicions pointed to minor strokes, but changes in diet, exercise, and physical therapy failed to halt the progression or restore strength.

ALS, a rare and incurable neurodegenerative disorder, progressively damages the nervous system, resulting in muscle paralysis.

Heartfelt Tributes and Final Words

An official statement on Friedman’s Instagram page announced his death the previous night, shared on Friday. It read in part: ‘His music meant everything to him & his guitar was his life’s breath. This insidious disease took that away from him.’

Prior to his passing, Friedman shared his emotions about the diagnosis: ‘It’s difficult to know what lies ahead, and it crushes me not to be able to play guitar, but the outpouring of love has been so, so strong.’ He added, ‘I’m absolutely blown away by the love and support from family, friends and fans. I love you all.’
