Aryna Sabalenka expressed deep frustration after squandering key opportunities in her Australian Open final defeat to Elena Rybakina. The world number one from Belarus fell 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 on Rod Laver Arena, despite holding a 3-0 lead in the decisive third set.
Sabalenka’s Post-Match Reflections
Speaking after the match, Sabalenka admitted she was particularly disappointed with her inability to capitalize on promising moments. “I was really upset with myself, I would say, because once again I had opportunities,” she stated. She acknowledged delivering strong tennis until the end but struggled against Rybakina’s intense pressure. “I played great until a certain point, and then I couldn’t resist that aggression that she had on court today,” Sabalenka added.
Despite the setback, the 2023 and 2024 Australian Open champion highlighted positive aspects of her performance. “But I think overall I played great tennis here in Australia. Even in this final I feel like I played great. I was fighting. I did my best, and today she was a better player,” she reflected.
Career Record and Outlook
Sabalenka now holds a balanced 4-4 record in Grand Slam finals, including back-to-back losses at the Australian Open following her 2025 upset by Madison Keys. Yet, she remains upbeat about her trajectory and the season ahead. “Today you’re a loser, tomorrow you’re a winner. Hopefully I’ll be more of a winner this season than a loser,” she said optimistically.
When questioned about potential adjustments in her approach against Rybakina, Sabalenka suggested she might have pushed more aggressively. She also commended her Moscow-born rival for her outstanding display. Looking forward, Sabalenka reaffirmed her commitment to perseverance. “Keep fighting, keep working hard, keep putting myself out there, and try my best if I have another chance in the final. Just go out there and do my best,” she concluded.
