Allegations surrounding former BBC Radio 2 star Scott Mills reveal that his accuser maintained contact with him for eight years following the purported offenses between 1997 and 2000. Mills recently lost his position at the BBC after new information surfaced.
Details of Ongoing Contact
Sources familiar with Mills during the 2000s confirm the pair remained friendly well into the mid-2000s. One individual stated: “Scott stayed in touch with him, and I first heard about him in 2001. They used to see each other, and Scott was friendly with him like he was with a lot of people. I’m sure they were still in contact until around 2006, it suggests they were still on good terms so I’m not sure what prompted the investigation.”
Many of Mills’ friends knew of the individual, described as a ‘lad,’ and noted their continued amicable relationship post-incidents.
Police Investigation and BBC Awareness
The Metropolitan Police initiated contact with the BBC on several occasions starting in 2017 regarding the allegations, which originated with Hampshire Police in 2016. The probe involved claims of serious sexual offenses against a boy aged 13 to 16. Mills, then at Radio 1, voluntarily attended questioning in London without arrest.
A file was submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service, which concluded insufficient evidence existed for charges. The case closed in 2019. BBC executives knew of the investigation from 2017 but lacked full details, such as the accuser’s age.
Mills Breaks Silence
In a statement released through his lawyers, the 53-year-old Mills addressed the matter directly: “The recent announcement that I am no longer contracted to the BBC has led to the publication of rumour and speculation. In response to this the Metropolitan Police has made a statement, which I confirm relates to me. An allegation was made against me in 2016 of a historic sexual offence which was the subject of a police investigation in which I fully cooperated and responded to in 2018. As the police have stated, a file of evidence was submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service, which determined that the evidential threshold had not been met to bring charges. Since the investigation related to an allegation that dates back nearly 30 years and the police investigation was closed seven years ago, I hope that the public and the media will understand and respect my wish not to make any further public comment on this matter. I wish to thank from the bottom of my heart all those who have reached out to me with kindness, my former colleagues and my beloved listeners, who I greatly miss.”
BBC’s Decision and New Information
The BBC terminated Mills’ contracts on March 27 after receiving fresh details about his conduct. A spokesperson explained: “In recent weeks, we obtained new information relating to Scott and we spoke directly with him. As a result, the BBC acted decisively in line with our culture and values and terminated his contracts.”
The corporation confirmed awareness of the 2017 police probe, closed without charges in 2019, and pledged further review of internal knowledge at the time.
Recent Developments
In May 2025, former BBC presenter Anna Brees, now a freelance journalist, alerted executives to alleged inappropriate communications involving Mills and inquired about prior complaints on safeguarding or harassment. The BBC acknowledged the oversight, stating: “We received a Press query in 2025 which included limited information. This should have been followed up and we should have asked further questions. We apologise for this and will look into why this did not happen.”
Police and BBC lawyers reportedly discussed the matter as recently as last week, with at least four prior interactions since January 2017. The accuser and Mills are believed to have connected online.
