Making Life On Earth: Attenborough’s Greatest Adventure
This BBC iPlayer documentary earns five out of five stars. It highlights Sir David Attenborough’s pivotal role in the landmark 1979 natural history series Life on Earth. Viewers revisit the young BBC executive who opted out of a potential director-general position on advice from his brother, actor and director Richard Attenborough.
The film uncovers behind-the-scenes stories from the three-year production across 100 locations. Sir David and his team share warm reflections on capturing iconic footage, including the memorable moment a baby gorilla sat on him. For many, this series rivals the Moon landings in transforming perspectives on the natural world.
Centenary Celebrations
Sir David Attenborough reaches his 100th birthday today. In a recorded message shared the evening before, he reveals plans for a quiet celebration were upended by widespread support.
‘I had rather thought that I would celebrate my 100th birthday quietly, but it seems that many of you have had other ideas,’ he states. ‘I’ve been completely overwhelmed by birthday greetings from pre-school groups to care home residents and countless individuals and families of all ages. I simply can’t reply to each of you all separately, but I would like to thank you all most sincerely for your kind messages. I wish those of you who have planned your own local events tomorrow a very happy day.’
A live event at the Royal Albert Hall broadcasts on BBC One, featuring music from his programs, stories, and insights from public figures and nature advocates.
Additional Tributes
The Natural History Museum adapts its immersive exhibition, Our Story With David Attenborough, into a free five-minute display at Outernet London in Tottenham Court Road starting today. It traces human history, Earth’s story, and envisions London’s future through Sir David’s lens.
Environmental and animal charities flood him with messages. PETA India names a rescued bull ‘Sir Attenbullock’ in his honor as part of its Delhi mechanization project.
