Spice Girls Regain Control of ‘Spice World’ Movie, Eyeing Revival

Published on

The iconic 1997 film Spice World is poised for a comeback, as the members of the Spice Girls have successfully regained full ownership of the movie’s rights. This development paves the way for a potential cinematic revival and re-release, much to the delight of fans anticipating the film’s 30th anniversary next year.

Spice Girls Take Full Control of ‘Spice World’ Film Rights

Melanie C, also known as Sporty Spice, revealed the significant news during an appearance on The Louis Theroux Podcast. She explained that the film, a cult classic and commercial success, has been unavailable on streaming platforms due to fragmented ownership. “It was kind of all over the place,” Melanie C stated. “So we’ve had to come together. The Spice Girls now fully own it, so we will be presenting it at some point in hopefully the not too distant future for people to enjoy.”

The acquisition of the film rights marks a pivotal moment for the group, allowing them direct control over the distribution and future of their cinematic venture. While a specific release date or format for the revival has not yet been announced, the confirmation that the group now holds the rights signals a strong intention to make the film accessible again.

Behind the Scenes: Filming ‘Spice World’ and Notable Cameos

Spice World, beyond its pop culture impact, is remembered for its star-studded cast of cameos. The film featured appearances from a diverse range of personalities, including actors like Roger Moore and Richard E. Grant, and television personalities such as Michael Barrymore. Barry Humphries, in a memorable role, portrayed an Australian media mogul reminiscent of Rupert Murdoch, attempting to uncover damaging information about the group.

Melanie C reflected on how the movie mirrored the band’s real-life experiences during their meteoric rise to fame. “That was really how we were. That was our experience,” she shared. “You know, we’d been out there, we’d been promoting for a year when we sat down and the movie was being written. So a lot of those experiences that are the through line of the movie were the things that we were experiencing.” This authenticity is often cited as a key factor in the film’s enduring appeal.

Addressing Controversial Cameos

The production of Spice World also encountered controversy. Melanie C confirmed that a segment featuring Gary Glitter was ultimately cut from the final edit. This decision was made following Glitter’s arrest on child pornography charges. “While the movie was getting edited, we were like, ‘Oh, s***, he’s got to go’,” she recalled, highlighting the swift response to the unfolding situation.

Anniversary Plans and Future Reunions

Beyond the film revival, the Spice Girls continue to explore opportunities for a reunion to commemorate their anniversary. Melanie C indicated that discussions are ongoing regarding various potential projects. “We are discussing lots of great opportunities,” she confirmed.

However, coordinating schedules for all five members—Melanie Brown (Scary Spice), Melanie Chisholm (Sporty Spice), Emma Bunton (Baby Spice), Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice), and Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice)—remains the primary challenge. “Getting everybody together to discuss those plans remains the biggest challenge,” Melanie C admitted. “We don’t have them (meetings) often enough because it’s still a business. You know, there are still things we have to take care of. You know? We have our trademark, and we have lots of great merchandise out there, of course. This year’s a big anniversary.”

Despite the logistical hurdles, the group remains optimistic. “We want to. Everything’s in discussion. But it’s a really positive time for us,” Melanie C stated. She clarified that while nothing is currently set in stone for the anniversary itself, the group is actively considering future possibilities. “There’s nothing in the works, so it’s obviously not going to be anything in time for the anniversary. But we are discussing lots of great opportunities.”

The Enduring Bond of the Spice Girls

Melanie C expressed a strong sentiment of continued belonging for all members, including Victoria Beckham, who has previously opted out of some group activities. “No one’s left,” she asserted. “I love it. When I’m doing shows and stuff, and if people want to introduce me, when they say former Spice Girl, I’m really offended. Because once a Spice Girl, always a Spice Girl. I think we all feel like that. There might be times we choose not to work in that arena, but we’re still Spice Girls.” This statement underscores the enduring identity and connection the members share, regardless of their individual career paths.

The Spice Girls’ journey, from global pop phenomenon to film producers reclaiming their work, continues to captivate audiences. The revival of Spice World and the ongoing discussions about future group activities suggest that the iconic girl group’s influence remains potent.
