Starmer Urges Zelensky: Keep Focus on Ukraine Amid Iran War

Published on

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that global attention must stay fixed on Ukraine’s defense against Russia, even as the US-Israeli conflict with Iran intensifies. The leaders met in London, where they signed a new defense partnership targeting drone threats.

Key Discussions in London

During the Tuesday meeting at Downing Street, Starmer hosted Zelensky following his recent Paris visit and ahead of a Madrid trip. This European tour unfolds against the backdrop of Middle East tensions overshadowing Ukraine’s ongoing four-year battle with Russia.

Efforts by the United States to broker a peace deal between Kyiv and Moscow have stalled due to the Iran war, with no new talks scheduled. Washington has also eased some sanctions on Moscow to stabilize surging oil prices triggered by regional instability.

“The focus must remain on Ukraine,” Starmer stated. “A conflict rages in the Middle East, but we cannot divert attention from Ukraine or the essential support it requires,” he added.

New Drone Defense Agreement

The UK-Ukraine pact harnesses Ukraine’s drone interception skills from its war with Russia alongside Britain’s manufacturing strengths to produce advanced drones and technologies. It allocates £500,000 ($670,000) for an AI Center of Excellence within Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense.

The agreement aims to enhance worldwide defenses against affordable, high-tech weapons like drones. Since the US-Israeli operations against Iran began last month, Tehran has deployed ballistic missiles against Israel but turned to drones for Gulf targets.

Zelensky’s Parliamentary Address

Speaking to UK lawmakers, Zelensky highlighted Ukraine’s dispatch of 201 anti-drone specialists to the Middle East. These teams assist the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and soon Kuwait in countering Iranian Shahed drones—familiar from Russia’s assaults on Ukraine.

“We do not want this terror of the Iranian regime against its neighbors to succeed,” Zelensky declared in his 30-minute address, showcasing Kyiv’s hard-earned expertise.

Starmer reaffirmed the UK’s commitment: “Our resolve is unbreakable.” Zelensky also held a private meeting with King Charles at Buckingham Palace, expressing gratitude for the royal family’s solidarity. Later, he planned discussions with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
