Tasmania’s Largest Meth Bust: 17kg of Ice Seized, Two Men Charged

Published on

Authorities in Tasmania have made what is believed to be the state’s largest-ever seizure of methamphetamine, commonly known as ice. Police intercepted two vehicles on Friday near Burnie in the north-west, leading to the discovery of approximately 17 kilograms of the illicit drug. The estimated street value of the confiscated substance is around $8.5 million.

Major Drug Bust Unfolds Near Burnie

The significant operation involved multiple units of Tasmania Police, including the Joint Organised Crime Task Force (JOCTF), the local drugs and firearms unit, and the Special Operations Group. Officers intercepted two vehicles in a beachside car park, a move that ultimately led to the substantial drug seizure.

In addition to the 17 kilograms of methamphetamine, law enforcement officials also recovered approximately $100,000 in cash. Police allege this cash is directly linked to drug trafficking activities within Tasmania. The successful operation is being hailed as a major blow against organized crime operating in the state.

Arrests and Charges

Following the interception and subsequent searches, two men were taken into custody and have since been charged. The individuals arrested are a 40-year-old man from New South Wales and a 41-year-old man from Hobart. Police have alleged that the Hobart man is a member of an outlaw motorcycle group.

Both men face charges of trafficking in controlled substances. They are scheduled to appear before the Devonport Magistrates Court. The charges reflect the seriousness of the alleged involvement in the importation and distribution of a significant quantity of methamphetamine.

Impact and Ongoing Investigation

Tasmania Police emphasized the critical importance of this seizure in preventing widespread harm. “We know by seizing the drugs, it will prevent catastrophic harm to individuals and the broader community,” a police statement indicated. The successful operation is expected to disrupt the supply of dangerous drugs into the state.

The investigation, however, is far from over. Authorities confirmed that efforts are continuing to dismantle the broader criminal network responsible for this importation. This network is believed to extend both within Australia and internationally. Police anticipate further arrests as the investigation progresses.

The Role of the Joint Organised Crime Task Force

Inspector Morrisby highlighted the effectiveness of the Joint Organised Crime Task Force (JOCTF) in combating organized crime. The JOCTF is a collaborative effort comprising Tasmania Police, the Australian Federal Police, the Australian Border Force, and other federal agencies. Since its establishment nearly two years ago, the task force has reportedly achieved several significant successes.

“This is yet another example of what these partnerships achieve when working collaboratively,” Inspector Morrisby stated. He issued a stern warning to criminal organizations, asserting that the JOCTF remains committed to identifying, investigating, and dismantling networks that seek to profit from drug-related harm in Tasmania.

Key Takeaways from the Bust:

  • Record Seizure: Approximately 17 kilograms of methamphetamine, believed to be Tasmania’s largest single ice bust.
  • High Street Value: Estimated street value of the seized drugs is $8.5 million.
  • Cash Confiscated: Over $100,000 in cash, alleged to be linked to drug trafficking, was also seized.
  • Arrests Made: Two men, one from NSW and one from Hobart (alleged bikie member), have been charged.
  • Ongoing Investigation: Police are pursuing the wider criminal network involved in the importation.
  • Collaborative Effort: The bust highlights the success of the Joint Organised Crime Task Force.

The operation serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threat posed by organized crime and the drug trade. The efforts of law enforcement agencies, particularly through collaborative task forces, are crucial in protecting communities from the devastating impact of illicit substances. The continuing investigation aims to ensure that all individuals involved in this significant importation face justice.
