Taylor Swift has launched a vibrant 90s-themed music video for her track “Opalite,” featuring a powerhouse cast of celebrities. The video, now available on Spotify and Apple Music, stars Irish actor Domhnall Gleeson as a lonely man alongside Swift’s portrayal of a similarly isolated woman. Lewis Capaldi appears as a mall photographer, while Greta Lee and Jodie Turner-Smith feature in fictional TV ads, joined by Cillian Murphy.
Inspiration Strikes on The Graham Norton Show
The concept for the video emerged during Swift’s October appearance on The Graham Norton Show, where she promoted her 2025 album The Life of a Showgirl. Sharing the story in a recent Instagram post, Swift explained that Gleeson’s light-hearted remark about wanting to star in one of her videos sparked an immediate idea.
“He’s Irish! He was joking! Except that in that moment during the interview, I was instantly struck with an *idea,*” she wrote. Just one week later, Swift sent Gleeson a script she penned herself, casting him in the lead role.
She envisioned involving the entire guest lineup from that episode—including host Graham Norton and co-stars Lee, Turner-Smith, and Capaldi—like an “adult school group project.” Everyone agreed to participate, leading to a shoot filled with creativity.
“I had more fun than I ever imagined. Made new friends, metaphors, and fashion choices. It was an absolute thrill to create this story and these characters,” Swift shared.
Album Promo and Personal Insights
The episode aired on October 3, coinciding with The Life of a Showgirl‘s release. Swift showcased her engagement ring and discussed wedding plans with fiancé Travis Kelce, saying, “You’ll know. I want to do the album stuff first, and the wedding is what happens after in terms of planning. I think it will be fun to plan.”
Describing the album as a secret passion project developed behind the scenes of her Eras Tour, Swift noted her evolving songwriting: “I am open about things but in recent years I have a different perspective and like storytelling at a little bit of a distance, so it isn’t like doing a complete autopsy of myself.”
She highlighted her expanded vocal abilities post-tour: “I think my wheelhouse is bigger now. I feel I can do anything now while running in heels. I am confident to write higher choruses, jump an octave, and do falsetto stuff.”
Opalite’s Deeper Meaning
“Opalite” stands out as a favorite for both Swift’s father and Kelce. “Growing opals in a lab is an interesting metaphor for making your own happiness; to rise above the trials and tribulations and be happy you did things on your terms,” she explained.
