A gripping documentary chronicling a retired Israeli general’s daring drive to rescue his family during the October 7, 2023, terror attacks in Israel premieres on CBC Gem today, March 13.
The Story of Bravery and Family
The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue follows Noam Tibon, a retired Israel Defense Forces general and grandfather, who sprang into action upon receiving a desperate text from his son. Journalist Amir Tibon lived at Nahal Oz kibbutz, just under a kilometer from the Gaza border. When terrorists stormed the community, Amir, his wife, and their two daughters barricaded themselves in a safe room and alerted his father in Tel Aviv, 85 kilometers away.
Noam Tibon and his wife armed themselves, jumped into their Jeep, and raced through chaos to reach their loved ones, embodying raw parental instinct amid unimaginable danger.
Festival Triumphs and Global Recognition
The film enjoyed a dramatic debut at the Toronto International Film Festival last September, where organizers briefly withdrew it over legal and safety issues before reinstating it. It ultimately claimed the People’s Choice Award for best documentary.
Since then, the documentary has screened at over 70 festivals worldwide, earning accolades including top prizes at the Budapest International Documentary Film Festival, audience awards in Palm Beach, Florida, and Australia, and the Dove for Justice from the Berlin-based Cinema for Peace awards, which also recognized Noam Tibon.
Director’s Vision and CBC Gem Milestone
Canadian director Barry Avrich emphasizes the film’s universal appeal. “We’re very excited about this,” he states. After the TIFF victory, his team approached CBC, which quickly embraced the project. “I fully recognized this would challenge those viewing it as political, but CBC saw it as a pure family story,” Avrich adds.
Avrich insists the narrative avoids religion or politics entirely. “It’s simply about what any parent would do upon a child’s distress text,” he explains. Currently available for rent or purchase on Amazon Prime and Apple TV, the CBC Gem launch marks a significant expansion.
Beyond the Screen: Feature Film and Ongoing Impact
Even before production, Hollywood acquired feature film rights for a scripted project tentatively titled October 7th, set to film this summer. Avrich secured an agreement to release his documentary first, honoring the Tibon family’s wishes.
Avrich maintains close contact with the Tibons. Recent talks reveal their mix of fear and hope amid escalating Middle East tensions. “They’re accustomed to conflict but remain realistic and protective,” he shares.
The film has also been optioned by Air Canada for in-flight entertainment, with negotiations underway for two major U.S. streaming platforms. Avrich praises festivals for balancing diverse October 7 stories. “Let audiences decide—multiple documentaries from all perspectives deserve a platform,” he concludes.
