A former police officer, Thomas Odell, has been sentenced for a shocking assault captured on camera, where he violently grabbed a woman by her hair and pulled her towards the ground while grinning in a nightclub. The incident, which occurred during a birthday celebration, has led to Odell being dismissed from Kent Police and handed a 12-month community order.

Drunken Assault at Canterbury Nightclub

The unprovoked attack took place on February 21 at Canterbury’s Cuban nightclub. Thomas Odell, then 30, was socializing with friends and a group of women, even presenting his police badge to establish his identity. According to prosecutor Lucie Fish, around midnight, Odell suddenly grabbed a fistful of one woman’s hair and yanked her head backward twice, forcing her towards the floor. Disturbing footage presented in court showed Odell smiling and appearing to chuckle during the assault, continuing his conversation with others as if unaffected.

The victim, who was celebrating with friends, was left in a state of shock. After the initial pull, she struggled to regain her footing, only for Odell to grab her hair again, pulling her down a second time. He then released her and appeared to laugh, raising his hand as if in apology. The woman fled back into the nightclub in tears, visibly distressed and seeking a way to leave the venue.

Victim’s Lasting Psychological Impact

While the victim sustained no visible physical injuries or hair loss, the psychological impact has been significant. In a statement read to Margate Magistrates’ Court, she described feeling too frightened to go into the city alone, requiring her boyfriend’s presence for reassurance. The incident has eroded her trust in the police, stating, “I am unable to trust the police because he abused his position of power.” She also noted that the attack caused distress to her boyfriend.

The court heard that the victim’s head ached the day after the incident, and the right side remained sore. Her distress was exacerbated by the force of the assault and the perpetrator’s identity as a police officer.

Defending, Simon Pettican stated that Odell had consumed more alcohol than usual due to his birthday celebration and had no memory of the assault. District Judge William Nelson characterized the assault as a “deliberate assault” on a “very vulnerable victim” with no excuse. He was also ordered to pay the victim £200 in compensation, to be paid at a rate of £20 per month due to his current benefit claims. Kent Police confirmed Odell was dismissed following an accelerated misconduct hearing. Detective Superintendent Joanna Lay stated that Odell, as a serving officer, was expected to uphold the highest standards of professional behavior, and the force acted swiftly to identify and arrest him upon reporting.
